Alfred Sowards Obituary

Alfred E. Sowards

Feb 12, 1933 - Dec 1, 2025

Lakeside Marblehead

Alfred (Al) Eugene Sowards, 92, of Lakeside Marblehead, passed away Monday, December 1, 2025, at Stein Hospice Care Center after a brief illness.

Al was born February 12, 1933, in West Portsmouth, to the late Alfred Sowards and Maude (Sowards) Distel. A hardworking man with a gift for forming lasting friendships, Al cherished the relationships he built within his community. He did not know a stranger, and he was always willing to fill a need wherever he saw one.

In 1953, Al was granted furlough from his service in Korea to marry the love of his life, Carrie. Thus began a 71-year marriage filled with hard work, fun, a love of music, holiday celebrations, but most of all, love. They left Portsmouth in 1956 and made their way north to Marblehead. Along with his own family, Al provided support and shelter to other people and families in need, providing a safe place to land in tough times. He felt a deep obligation to "pay it forward," never forgetting the help he was given as a young boy. He never forgot his roots and tried to help others navigate the difficulties in life.

Throughout the years, Al was employed by numerous local factories, including Ford Motor Company, US Gypsum, Celotex, among others. He was also involved in marina work, helping to build break walls and boat wells in the late 1950s. After spending over 30 years in the labor industry, Al embarked on a new adventure in retail, serving and selling custom fishing rods and reels. Al was full-time employed immediately prior to his illness at Tibbels Marina. Many local anglers would seek his guidance and expertise in all things related to Lake Erie fishing. Al was also a proud veteran of the United States Army, serving during the Korean War, and a talented golfer. He once hit a hole in one and jokingly remarked, "My only witness was the good Lord!"

Al was a member and two-time Past Master of Oliver H. Perry Masonic Lodge 341, Marblehead VFW Post 7572, and American Legion Post 83. He enjoyed fishing, boating, golfing, and spending time with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren and his late wife.

Al is survived by his son, Verl (Lisa) Sowards of Hudson, Florida; two daughters, Vanessa Sowards of Sandusky and Victoria Sowards of Port Clinton; two grandchildren, Brad Sowards of Palm Beach, Florida, and Rebecca (Mike) Deverso of Galena; four great-grandchildren, Lexie Sowards, Peyton Deverso, Avery Deverso, and Marin Deverso; his sister, JoAnn Pertuset of Nashville; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives whom he loved dearly.

In addition to his parents, Al was preceded in death by his wife, Carrie F. Sowards, in 2024, and his sister, Mary Etta Beasley of Akron.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. until time of services at noon Wednesday, December 10, 2025, at The Chapel - Port Clinton Campus, 4650 E. Port Clinton Eastern Rd., Port Clinton. Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory is assisting family with arrangements.
