Carolyn J. Smith, 84, of Sandusky, passed away Saturday afternoon Dec. 7, 2024, at Commons of Providence, Sandusky, following a brief illness.

She was born Aug. 16, 1940, in Sandusky, to James and Evelyn (Hire) Ryan. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sandusky, and graduated from Margaretta High School.

Carolyn received her nursing degree from Sandusky School of Practical Nursing and worked as a nurse at Providence Hospital for 29 years, retiring from Firelands Regional Medical Center after five years. She enjoyed cake decorating, crafts, counted cross stitch, and walking. Carolyn was a loyal fan of the Cleveland Indians and loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also loved watching all their sporting and school events.

She is survived by her daughter, Tamara (Bruce) Holmer; three sons, Thomas Smith, Chuck (Ellen) Smith and Joseph Smith; grandson, Joshua (Christina) Holmer; ten granddaughters, Heather (Andrew) Kuns, Brook Holmer, Kelsey Holmer, Mallory Smith, Kylie Smith, Charlie Smith, Helen Smith, Samantha Smith, Kathryn Smith and Chanel (Michael) Crees; five great-great-grandchildren, Layla Kuns, Willow Kuns, Mackenzie Holmer, Amelia Crees and Niko Crees; sister, Martha Ryan; brother, Dennis (Elaine) Ryan; and many nieces and nephews.

Carolyn was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Smith; parents, James and Evelyn (Hire) Ryan; sisters, Sheila Fry and Patricia Christie; and two stepbrothers, Amos and Roger Eastman.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. until the time of services at noon Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2024, at Ransom Funeral & Cremation Service, 610 S. Washington St., Castalia. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery.
