David Victor "Dave" Brown, 74, passed away Saturday, Sept. 16, 2023. Dave lived in Huron most of his life and was a resident of Lakeland, Florida, at time of death.
Dave is survived by his wife, Loree; sons, Rob of Huron and Todd (Marissa) of Norwalk; granddaughters, Havana Marie and Myla Rose; grandson, Dax Fisher; sister-in-law, Maria Brown of Los Angeles, California; nephew, Gary (Judy); grandnephew, Coltan of Los Angeles, CA; uncle, Don Schuster of Elyria; four first cousins, Ron, Barb, Linda, and Sandy; and dear friends, Sticks Gioffre, Dave Ritter, Gretchen Pisano, and Mike Wyatt.
Dave was preceded in death by his father, Wayne (1968); mother, Marilyn (2006); brother, Gary (2019); grandparents, Victor and Ruth Brown and Henry and Cora Hahn; aunts, Lois Schuster and Jean Jenson; uncle, Art Jensen; cousins, Rick and Susan; and best friend, Ralph Pisano Jr. (2006).
A 1967 graduate of Huron High School and 1971 graduate of Bowling Green State University, Dave earned his Master's Degree in History from BGSU in 1976. Dave Brown spent 40 years in education as a teacher and administrator at Huron, Sandusky, Edison, and Cuyahoga Heights Schools and was a head baseball, head girls basketball, and head golf coach. He was also an assistant in football, baseball, and boys and girls basketball during his career.
Dave initiated one of the first athletic halls of fame in northern Ohio at Sandusky High School in 1987 and also initiated Huron High School's Athletic Hall of Fame in 1993. He became members of both in 2001 (Huron) and 2005 (Sandusky). Dave was selected Athletic Director of the Year for the Northwest District in 1991 and spoke at the National Athletic Director's Convention in 1985. He was inducted into the Ohio Athletic Director's Hall of Fame in 2016. He also was selected as Huron's Educator of the Year in 2000. He initiated the fundraiser to build the all-weather track in Huron.
A lover of sports, Dave played golf, softball, flag football, and bowled for many years in the Sandusky and Huron and Lakeland, Florida, area. He was the director of golf at Heatherwood Village in Lakeland and Lakeland Senior Men's Golf Association. Dave saw a Kentucky Derby, an Indy 500, a football game at old Yankee Stadium, the first game at Jacob's Field, many Cleveland Browns and Ohio State football games, Hank Aaron's 716* home run, Mark McGwire hitting a home run against the scoreboard at Jacobs Field, and Michael Jordan scoring 69 points against Cleveland Cavs. He loved to travel and made numerous trips with Loree to the Caribbean and Las Vegas, and also traveled to Africa, Tahiti, Bali, Fiji, Mediterranean, Austria, and Germany. Dave also enjoyed conducting trivia contests at Huron Yacht Club.
Among his part-time jobs in his life were paper boy (where he won three trips to New York City and Washington, D.C.), cutting lawns, cook at Corky's Restaurant, non-bonded policeman at Cedar Point, desk clerk at Sandusky Best Western, and sportswriter at Sandusky Register.
Dave was one of the five co-founders of the Sandusky Bay Stars college summer baseball league in 1991. He served as general manager and treasurer. Dave was a member of Lakeland Elks and past member of Huron Yacht Club, OEA, and NEA, and past member of the Huron, Sandusky, Edison, Westlake and Cuyahoga Heights Booster Clubs as well as a past member of IAB Club, Huron Eagles, and Sandusky Elks. Dave was a member of Jim Campbell Scholarship Committee and Huron and Sandusky Athletic Halls of Fame Selection Committees.
In 2012, Dave wrote and published the first volume of Huron Football and finished volume II in 2013. In 2023, his book, What If? was published by Page Publishing.
Cremation has taken place and his ashes will be spread in Simpson's Bay in St. Maarten. There will be no services at the request of the deceased. A celebration of life may be in Huron and at Heatherwood Village in Lakeland at a later time.
