Oh, my dearest friend Dwight... I´ll be missing you until it´s my turn to leave my worldly possessions behind. You have always been there for me.
We met at Edwards Pacemakers in Irvine, CA In 1978. I was 23 years old, and had just moved to So Cal from Seattle, and I was looking to make friends and blend in quickly. Boy, did we blend in! Happy Hours and televised football games were our jam. It got to a point where I schedule my haircuts for after one of our happy hours so I could get my head messaged because it would be hurting the next day! Either one of us would call for `Robin to make a hair appointment soon.´
You helped me move several times and fixed my car a time or two. Thanksgiving and Christmas were share with your family. Birthdays.
You went surf fishing off Huntington Beach near where I was living. That was always good happy hour fun. After a number of unsuccessful outings, I told you `Your luck is about to change. I´m wearing my lucky Bingo bracelet.´ Well, it was all it took. About 20 minutes later, there was a huge tug on your fishing pole, and that was the most excited I´ve seen you EVER! So, you go wrestle pole for 10 minutes with multiple shouts over your shoulder `It´s a whopper!´ It´s a stingray! I can feel it´s wings, Robin!!´ I´ve lake and river fished before but I never surf fish, and the tide would throw me off so I believed him a little. Feeling its wings did seem weird, though... Another 10 minutes before you could get your `catch´ on sand. Dwight´s catch was a large ball of plastic shopping bags with seaweed, sea vines, trash and a 5´ branch! It was the most hysterically funny thing that I shared with you! I said, `Would you please demonstrate the wing action of your `stingray´ you were loudly yelling about. I went home with wet pants from laughing so hard. Also, I later listed you as "Stingray" in cell phone. You will always be my stingray! It´s going to stay in my phone until my son disconnects it.
Forty-eight years of friendship. I visited Maryland, and you found Seattle several times. Too bad Mt St Helen´s was foggy and you couldn´t see the blast zone. Good thing you found an authentic blues club downtown.
I´m glad I started to ending conversations with I love you years back. Oh, it was awkward at first, but it was more important to me for you to understand how deep the waters of our friendship ran...
We´ll see each other again, when it´s my time. I´ll meet you at the surf for some fishing...

Dwight was an old soul, and a really good person. The man never tied his shoes, and how he either didn't walk out of them or fall is beyond me. He will surely be missed.

I first met Dwight over 20 years ago. He was wearing his comfortable blue overalls. In all those years I don't think I ever saw him in any other attire. Whatever happened he was going to be comfortable, and he made everyone in the room feel comfortable too. Johnny imparted his winemaking savvy to many of us, and encouraged us to learn and improve our wines in the Flying Vines winemaking group. I will think of Johnny every time I pick wild fruit beside the road.

I came to know Dwight through work as we shared an office for years. More than a colleague, he became a friend. He talked me into learning how to brew beer and freely dispensed his knowledge of making wine. Dwight (or Uncle Johnny) to many of his neighbors was a true character of the first order. Whether he was on a wild hog hunt in Texas, fishing on the outer banks or driving cross country to visit family he enjoyed life. I will miss him dearly.

We are so saddened to hear of Dwight's passing. We worked and played with Dwight starting in the Shiley days. Dwight was such a bright light in all of our lives and we were better people for knowing him. So many rounds of golf with him, all filled with jokes and laughter. I am sure he with Joe Bales and Kelly Scott are up there yuckin' it up. May Dwight rest in peace. Our sincere condolences to his family.
