Gertrude Schaufler Obituary

Gertrude "Trudy" Schaufler

Feb 13, 1936 - Mar 1, 2023

Castalia

Gertrude "Trudy" Schaufler, 87, of Castalia, passed away peacefully Wednesday, March 1, 2023, at The Commons of Providence surrounded by her loving family.

She was born Feb. 13, 1936, in Austria. Her husband, Walter, came to the United States first in 1956. Trudy came in later through Canada in 1957. They were married in Windsor, Canada, in 1958. Trudy and Walter started their lives together in Clyde then to Sandusky and finally building their forever home in Castalia.

Trudy became a proud United States citizen in 1998. Trudy was a talented seamstress for the former Preis store located in the Sandusky Mall, Joseph's Clothing Store, and Weber's Incorporated. She was a former member of Sandusky Yacht Club and charter member of Sandusky Ski Club, where she was crowned the first Sandusky Ski Club Queen in 1966 and was crowned the Ohio Ski Queen the same year. Trudy loved traveling the world with family and friends. She and Walter enjoyed many trips that often included her passion for skiing and love for sailing.

Trudy was a beautiful soul and everything she did was done with love and class. When visiting friends, she always had a bouquet of fresh flowers from her garden for them. Her pleasure was serving others, from elegant dinners to delightful desserts. She always put everyone before herself. Trudy also enjoyed gardening and being outdoors.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years and love of her life, Walter Schaufler of Castalia; the pride and joys of her life, daughter, Tina Weaver of Elyria, and son, James (Tami) Schaufler of Castalia; grandchildren, Carson (Nick) Pane of Fort Calhoun, Nebraska, Lauren (Cody) Flew of Willard, and Collin Schaufler of Castalia; great-grandchildren, Sterling Pane, Jaycee Flew, and Aria Flew; sister-in-law, Traudi Welshofer of Sandusky; brother-in-law, Alfred Schaufler of Austria; and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and many other family and loved ones.

Visitation will be 3-6 p.m. Sunday, March 5, 2023, at Pfeil Funeral Home, Sandusky Chapel, 617 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky. Additional visitation will be 10 a.m. Monday, March 6, 2023, until the time of Trudy's funeral at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Pastor Ryan Brown will officiate. Burial will be at Castalia Cemetery.
