James Brinker Obituary

James E. "Jim" Brinker

Apr 7, 1941 - Oct 6, 2025

Huron

James E. Brinker, 84, of Huron, slipped anchor Monday evening, October 6, 2025. He has high hopes of catching up with Donna. "All in all, it was one heck of a ride, and I look forward to what lies ahead." -Jim

Jim was born April 7, 1941, in Sandusky, to Reid and Vesta Brinker (Dwelle). He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Donna J. Brinker; his brother, Jack Brinker; and his parents.

He is survived by his children, Stacey Witter (Jeffrey Witter) and Jen Brinker (Reggie McCloskey) and their families, his nephew, Jack Brinker, niece, Lara Brinker and her children; and his faithful cat-companion, Gumdrop.

A lifelong sailor and lover of the long game, Jim charted a course through life with humor, courage, and curiosity. Growing up, he attended summer programs at Culver Academy. After graduating from High School in 1959, he spent a year aboard the brigantine Albatross, sailing around the African continent. Over the years, Jim sailed countless races across the Great Lakes aboard Fine Feather and won the SORC in 1971. He was a proud member of the Storm Trysail Club. He and Donna were longtime members of the Sandusky Sailing Club and spent summers there with their kids aboard the family's boat, Bonji. They were active club members, serving on committees and helping host memorable events.

Jim built a successful career in banking, starting at Cleveland Trust in 1969 and eventually moving his family to Mount Vernon, Ohio, where he held the position of Vice President of Commercial Loans at First-Knox National Bank. In this role, his steady leadership and integrity earned the trust of colleagues and clients alike. Outside of work, Jim loved singing in the Kenyon Community Choir, and he served on the board of the Knox County Symphony. He and Donna were engaged members of their community and made friendships that lasted long after they moved back to Sandusky during retirement.

Jim was a lifelong subscriber to National Geographic, a member of AAA for 69 years, and proudly maintained an excellent credit score throughout his life.

In accordance with Jim's wishes, there will be no calling hours or funeral mass. A private burial will be held later for the family. In the spirit of how he lived his life, his family asks that the next time you're gathered with friends or loved ones, you take a moment to share a memory, raise a glass, and toast Jim, who always believed the journey was as important as the destination.

If you wish to give in Jim's memory, please choose an organization or individual close to your heart and offer assistance in whatever way feels most fitting. Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, 2001 Columbus Ave., Sandusky, is handling arrangements.
