James Richard DeHenning, 86, residing in Sandusky, passed away Monday, October 6, 2025, at Firelands Regional Medical Center after a lengthy battle with cancer.

James was born December 11, 1938, in Sandusky, to the late Harold and Gertrude (McCloskey) DeHenning.

James graduated from Sandusky High School in 1957. He was a veteran of the United States Army who proudly served his country from 1958 to 1960. He retired from General Motors as a bearing assembler in 1993. James was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. He enjoyed cheering for The Ohio State Buckeyes, coaching and playing softball as a center fielder, and was an avid bowler and woodworker. Above all, he cherished spending time with his family.

James is survived by his loving wife, Joyce (Zoellner) DeHenning, whom he married in 1991. He is also survived by his three daughters, Melissa (John) Friend, Marcie Klein, Cristy (Jayson) Deerwester; grandchildren, Justin Friend, Heather (Alexander) Holybee, Stefanie Friend, Brittany (Joshua) Wright, Steven (Alyssa) Slocum, Alicia (Tyler) Carpenter, and David (Jessica) Miller; three sisters, Audrey (the late Ike) Lippert, Patricia (the late John) Wilson and Chris (Mark) Nelson and numerous great-grandchildren and special nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, James is preceded in death by two sisters, Beverly Perrine and Betty Rice; and his brother, Harold DeHenning.

Friends may call from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, October 9, 2025, at Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky. Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. Friday, October 10, 2025, at Calvary Baptist Church, 1810 E. Perkins Ave. Sandusky, with Pastor David Hixson presiding. Burial will follow at Meadow Green Memorial Park, Huron.
