James "Jim" Chris Goelz, 81, of Sandusky, passed away peacefully Sunday, January 4, 2026, at Stein Hospice Care Center after an extended illness.
He was born October 2, 1944, in Sandusky, to the late Christian and Lena (Alber) Goelz. He spent his whole life in the city, creating a rich tapestry of local friends. At various times in his diversified journey, Jim served as an accountant, a weather monitor, a caregiver, a collector, a club treasurer, and a church pianist.
Jim is survived by his significant other, Shirley Seville; niece, Diana Malinkey; two nephews, Philip Goelz and Chris Goelz; and two resilient turtles that he famously cared for since 1958. Others who loved Jim and will miss him dearly include the members of Christian Singles Fellowship and the congregation of Venice Road Baptist Church.
Cremation will take place. Friends may call from noon - 1 p.m. Tuesday, January 13, 2026, at Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, 2001 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. Memorial services will begin at 1 p.m. with Pastor Wayne Keith presiding. Burial will follow at Oakland Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to contribute to James's memory may do so to Stein Hospice, 1200 Sycamore Line, Sandusky, OH 44870.

I met Jim through the national weather service forecast office in Cleveland .I needed a weather man to monitor weather for the Erie County fair 15 years ago. They recommended Jim, if you needed to know anything about weather in the last 50 some years, Jim could tell you every day what the weather was. He Documented weather everyday. Another one of those super nice guys, he will be missed. I hope all his records go someplace Useful.

I met Jim about 7 years ago through the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Cleveland.. I told them I needed somebody to gauge rain for me for the Erie County Fairgrounds during fair and they highly suggested Jim. At that point I learned that he was documenting weather and sense since he was a little kid. You tell him what day and he could tell you what the weather was, very impressive. So for about fifteen years he donated his time and energy to be our weatherman. He will dearly be missed. Thank you Jim...
