James Rufener Obituary

James E. Rufener

Feb 4, 1969 - Nov 28, 2024

Sandusky

It is with heavy hearts, we share the news of James E. Rufener "Toad", "JR", and "Jimmy the Bull", 55, who unexpectedly left us Thursday, Nov. 28, 2024, while vacationing with his wife in Hollywood, Florida.

Born Feb. 4, 1969, in Wooster, he was the treasured son of Barbara Raff and the late James Eugene Rufener.

Jim was a proud veteran who served in the United States Marine Corps as a Combat Engineer from 1987 to 1991. He was a Combat Veteran of Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Jim continued to serve veterans as a Senior County Veteran Service Officer at Huron County Veteran Service Office. Jim was a member of the American Legion Post 83, VFW Post 2529, AMVETS Post 17 and Orioles Club.

A graduate of Northwestern High School in West Salem, Jim was known for his remarkable handyman abilities, always eager to lend a helping hand. He had a profound love for animals, especially dogs, of which he had several over the years. His heart was full of passion for OSU football (O-H), and he found joy playing his guitar, fly fishing, fishing, hunting, music, golfing, his taste for bourbon and creating beautiful memories with family and friends. Jim had a special love for drag racing, cheering for his favorite drivers, Ron Capps and Steve Torrence, on race days. He loved his family and cared deeply for everyone in his life, and never let too much time pass by, frequently reaching out to check on loved ones. His laughter was contagious, and he found joy in bringing smiles to others. Fiercely patriotic, loyal, dependable, and trustworthy, Jim held dear the values that truly mattered in life. Above all, he cherished the moments spent with his wife Shari and his loved ones, no matter what the occasion.

Jim is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Shari Peace-Rufener, whom he entered into the sacred bond of marriage Oct. 2, 2021; mother, Barbara Raff of Orrville; daughters, Emily (Kyle) Boreman of Kansas City, Kansas and BreeAnna (Ray) Klein of Sandusky; son, Zachary VanZandt of Sandusky; and his beloved grandchildren, Abigail, Annalise, Avery and Clarke; brother, Dan (Kathy) Rufener of Kidron; along with numerous loving nieces, nephews, cousins; and a circle of special friends he considered family who cherished him.

In addition to his father in 2015, Jim is preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents; aunts and uncles; and his beloved dog, Daisy Mae.

Friends may call from 2-5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, 2024, at Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 15, 2024, at the funeral home with Pastor John Adams presiding. Burial will follow at Oakland Cemetery in Sandusky. A celebration of life will take place at the American Legion, 3615 Hayes Ave., Sandusky, immediately following the burial until 5 p.m.
