John "Jack" Fischer, 83, of Castalia, passed away peacefully early Saturday morning, Feb. 25, 2023, at home.
Jack was born Dec. 15, 1939, in Sandusky, to the late John and Catherine (Federkeil) Fischer. During the Volunteer Draft, like his brothers, he joined the military. He served four years with U.S. Navy, Norfolk Virginia Naval Base, serving aboard the Aircraft carrier USS Intrepid during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was a Seaman on the Deckforce working in many different capacities and worked his way up to the level of an E5.
He enjoyed working with metal and over the years, he became well-known throughout Sandusky and Norwalk for his fabrication skills. He retired from David Price Metal Services (Fabriweld) after 25 years. He enjoyed working with and spoke highly of many of his co-workers from there.
He was a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church. He also was a member of American Legion Post 83, VFW post 2529, and Amvets post 17.
Jack enjoyed the great outdoors, fishing, hunting, and watching Cleveland Browns, Ohio State, and Cleveland Indians with his boys. He loved being on the water. He enjoyed gardening, backyard BBQs, camping, family reunions, and fireworks.
Jack is survived by four sons, William (Marian) Fischer of Huron, Dean (Laurie) Fischer of Norwalk, Jeffrey Fischer of Castalia, and Jason Fischer of Clyde; eight grandchildren, Katelyn Hartman of Willard, Ana Mae Fischer of Toledo, Tyler Fischer of Minnesota, Nathan Fischer of Norwalk, Maddison and Marissa Fischer of Middleburg Heights, Angela Killian of Castalia, and Joe Stout of Florida; two great-granddaughters, Kimber Rose and Remington Jolene Hartman, both of Willard; brother, Theodore Fischer of Texas; sister, Susan (Bill) Patterson; sister-in-law, Connie Fischer; brother-in-law, Larry Kovasckitz; brother and sister-in-law, Ron and Sophia Spataro; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Antonia (Toni), whom he married Dec. 24, 1959; parents; in-laws, Jose and Teresa Avila; sisters and brothers-in-law, Virginia and Jack Sherwood, Eileen and Herb Lavey, Mary Ann and Gene Taylor, and Christine and Kenny Berkey; brother, Jim Fischer; in-laws, Jesus and Josefina Avila, Mary and Raul Veliz, and Ernestina Kovasckitz; and several nieces, nephews, and in-laws.
Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2023, at Groff Funeral Home and Crematory, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky. Jack's funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 1, 2023, at the funeral home with Deacon Phil Dinovo officiating. Burial will follow at Castalia Cemetery.
