John McGory Obituary

John A. McGory

Apr 18, 1930 - Apr 15, 2023

Huron

John A. McGory, residing in Huron, passed away Saturday, April 15, 2023.

John was born April 18, 1930, in Sandusky, to Maurice and Helen (Wick) McGory. He attended St. Peter and Paul grade school and graduated from Sandusky High School in 1948. He then enlisted in U.S. Army Air Corps before attending Miami University. After graduating from Miami, he was commissioned an officer in U.S. Air Force, serving from 1953-1955.

After serving his country, John returned home and worked at New Departure, General Motors, for 40 years, retiring in 1995. John continued working after retirement as a Special Project Manager for FlexTech.

He was a founding member of the Crews Nest and long-time member of Sandusky Yacht Club. John enjoyed sailing with his family in his sailboat, the Huntress, and began snow skiing in his 30s which he enjoyed into his 80s. John was also a past President of Huron Booster Club and loved watching his children and grandchildren compete. In spite of all his activities, his favorite place was sitting on his porch swing overlooking the shores of Lake Erie. His sharp wit and eternal optimism made him a friend to many. He was a wise and generous man who was kind and inviting to others and, above all, loved his family, sharing his love and knowledge with his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Janet L. (Kershner) McGory; children, Jeffrey McGory of Huron, Greg (Paula) McGory of Sandusky, and Andrea (Robert) Clune of Madison, Alabama; grandchildren, Meghan (Kipp) Davidson of Lakewood, John (Claire) Clune of Huntsville, Alabama, and Evan (Kate Stone) McGory of Grafton; great-grandchildren, Stella Davidson and Jackson Clune; nephew, Peter (Holly) McGory; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Maurice McGory Jr. and William McGory; sisters-in-law, Nina McGory and Marion McGory; and niece, Linda McGory.

The family will have a private remembrance.
