John G. Papcun

John G. Papcun, 84, of Perrysburg and formerly of Port Clinton, passed away with his family by his side Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2023, at The Waterford at Levis Commons Community in Perrysburg.

He was born June 23, 1938, in Port Clinton, the son of the late John and Mary (Kerul) Papcun. He was the youngest of four. He married to Elizabeth "Betsy" Stoddard-Clements and she survives.

John graduated from Port Clinton High School in 1956. He was elected to the inaugural Port Clinton Athletic Hall of Fame in 1996. John graduated from University of Toledo School of Engineering in 1960 and played basketball. He was inducted into UT Athletic Hall of Fame in 1992. John was elected eight terms as Ottawa County Engineer and two terms as County Commissioner. He was an avid athlete in baseball, basketball, bowling, and golf with several state championships. John was a big fan of his grandchildren's athletic activities as well as Port Clinton Redskins, University of Toledo Rockets, Boston Celtics, and Cleveland Indians. He was President of Ohio County Engineers Association in 1974. Among his many items he developed was the road sign "Please drive slowly, we (heart symbol) our children."

John was a member of Port Clinton Athletic Boosters, UT Varsity T Club, Elks, PC Yacht Club, and Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. He was a life-long resident of Port Clinton and Catawba Island.

John's survivors include his wife, Betsy, of 47 years; sons, Eric Papcun of Norwalk, Iowa, and Daniel Clements (Cathy) of Glendale, Arizona; daughters, Kathy Williams (Doug) of Adrian, Michigan, Nancy Alford (Andy) of Dallas, Texas, Susan Parker (Randy) of Perrysburg, and Peggy Kalbfus (Todd) of Penfield, New York; grandchildren, Elivia and Tillman Papcun, Jennifer and Ben Decker Charles Williams, Max Alford, Katy (Alford) Council, Nick and Alex Clements, Steven, Andy and David Parker, and Ryan Kalbfus; 14 great-grandchildren; and sister, Margaret Selgo of Archbold.

He was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Kaitlyn Williams; great-granddaughter, Evelyn Williams; and sisters, Ann Wharton and Mary Ireland.

Visitation will be 3-6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 3, 2023, at Gerner-Wolf-Walker Funeral Home, 216 Washington Street, Port Clinton. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, 2023, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 414 Madison Street, Port Clinton, with Fr. Jonathan Wight officiating. Burial will follow at Catawba Island Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Port Clinton City Schools, in care of John Papcun Scholarship Fund or charity of your choosing.
