John P. Wassner
Dec 12, 1943 - Jul 14, 2025
Sandusky
John P. Wassner, 81, of Sandusky, passed peacefully to the Celestial Lodge Above Monday, July 14, 2025, at Admiral's Pointe Nursing Facility after more than four years of fighting brain diseases. His wife of 52 years, and love of his life, Jerilyn (Jeri), was by his side.
John was born December 12, 1943, in Sandusky, to the late George P. Wassner and Esther K (Knupke) Wassner.
John graduated from Sandusky High School in 1961. He served in the Army National Guard for six years. He was the third generation to own and operate the former Wassner Tire Service (When you stop, we start), following his grandfather, Philip, and his father, George. He was a lifelong resident of Sandusky.
John was very active in Masonic organizations and Singara Grotto. He belonged to Science Lodge No. 50, F.& A.M., Sandusky City Chapter No. 72 R.A.M., Sandusky City Council No. 26, R. & S.M., Erie Commandery No. 23, K.T. He went through the chairs and became Master of the Lodge. He also belonged to Singara Grotto for many years. He went through the chairs and became Monarch in 1973 when they celebrated their 50th Anniversary. He was secretary/treasurer for many years, but he had to give it up when he became ill. He was also a 32nd degree Mason, Valley of Toledo.
John liked to plan road trips for a weekend getaway; he enjoyed finding different routes on the map for a scenic drive. (way before GPS, which he never trusted).
When Grotto had dances, John and Jeri would help decorate, prepare, and serve the meal, and dance the night away!! John was the most honest, humorous, creative, and kind gentle soul. He was always ready to tell a joke (he especially liked the risqué ones).
He married Jeri February 14, 1973, Valentine's Day. John would make a decorative item every year, and they would have hearts on them to match the number of years together.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jerilyn B. (Ott) Wassner; daughter, Michelle L. Stuper and her husband Jeffrey M. Stuper; and two wonderful grandchildren, Alyssa N. Stuper and Michael J. Stuper; his sister, Phyllis A. Wassner; his good friend, Mark McCombs; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his parents, George P. and Esther K (Knupke) Wassner; several aunts and uncles; and his favorite puppies, Fritzie and especially Buddy.
Friends may call from 9 a.m. until time of Masonic Memorial Service at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 19, 2025, at Christ Community Church, 2401 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky. Followed by military honors and John's Celebration of Life Service at 11 a.m. Pastor Erin Porter will officiate. It was his wish to be cremated and to be buried later with his wife, Jeri, and Buddy.
