Joseph L. Fitzgerald, 68, residing in Sandusky, passed away unexpectedly Friday, Sept. 30, 2022, at his home.

Joe was born Oct. 28, 1953, in Sandusky, to the late Lawrence and Margaret A. (Cassidy) Fitzgerald.

He was a 1972 graduate of Huron High School and worked for the family business, Fitzgerald Electric. He ultimately transitioned into an electrical supply distributor with Crescent Electric Supply, retiring in 2015. He was a proud volunteer for Huron Fire Department with over 25 years of dedicated service, and served as past president of Erie County and Huron Firefighters' Associations. During that time, he and Dan Matter helped organize Coat-A-Kid in the early 1990's, when he took great pride in assisting the children of Erie County. He was a member of several local service organizations and supported them frequently. Joe was recently a volunteer driver for Erie County Senior Center and their Meals-on-Wheels program.

He was a longtime member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.

He married the love of his life, Cynthia (Pfanner) on June 12, 1976, and she survived. Joe is also survived by their two sons, Robert (Courtney) Fitzgerald of Castalia and Ryan (Julie) Fitzgerald of Hillard. He was the proud Papa of five granddaughters, Kennedy, Cassidy, Rylie, Clare, and Reegan. Joe is also survived by three siblings, Timothy (Charmaine) Fitzgerald of Elkton, Florida, Margaret (Charles) Traband of Maumee, and James (Vicki) Fitzgerald of Huron; brothers and sisters-in-law, Linda (Michael) Goostree of Norwalk, and Mary Beth (Charles) Williams and Robert (Rebecca) Pfanner, both of Sandusky; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his mother and father-in-law, Robert and Rita (Herzog) Pfanner.

Joe will always be remembered for his kind heart, generosity, and devotion to his wife. His granddaughters will fondly remember his Donald Duck voice, swimming in his pool, and sitting with him in "Papa's" chair.

Friends may call 3-6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2022, at David F. Koch Funeral and Cremation Services, 520 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky. Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 6, 2022, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 429 Central Avenue, Sandusky. Internment will be at Calvary Cemetery.
