June A. (Matter) Illig, 94, a lifelong resident of Erie County, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2022, at Stein Hospice Care Center following a four-month illness.

June was born Jan. 16, 1928, in Sandusky, to the late Leon H. and Edna M. (Cullen) Matter, and spent her life living in Bay View and Sandusky.

June spent most of her life as a wife and mother, but worked at Philco for 10 years, did home health care through the health department for seven years, and worked at Viewpoint for 12 years. In her spare time, she enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, working on jigsaw puzzles, playing cards, gardening, and spending time with her family. She also loved to travel and often would take week-long trips with several of her sisters. In 2021 at the age of 93, she boarded an Amtrak train for Arizona with her daughter, Denise, and spent a month traveling the state, enjoying the sights before riding the train back home.

June is survived by her daughters, Denise Roberts (Rhonda) of Castalia and Linda (Dan) Imke of Maplewood, Ohio; sons, William (Jenny) Smith of Queen Creek, Arizona, Jeffery Smith of Perrysburg, and Stephen (Nhaneth) Smith of Norwalk; 16 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; sister, Marlene (Denzel) Brown of Sandusky; brother, Dean (Dorothy) Matter of Sandusky; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

In addition to her parents, June was preceded in death by her first husband, William Smith Jr.; second husband, Bill Illig; son, 1st Lt. Nelson Lee Smith; sisters, Gertrude Wobser, Mildred Bertschi, Betty Myers, Melba Johns, and Patricia Swander; and brothers, Oliver "Bus," Leon, and Elwood Matter.

Friends may call 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, 2022, until the time of June's funeral at 1 p.m. at Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky. Pastor Ryan Brown will officiate. Burial will follow at Meadow Green Memorial Park, Huron.
