Lavon Jackson Obituary

Lavon Jackson

May 30, 1950 - Oct 10, 2023

Lorain

Lavon Jackson, 73, of Lorain, transitioned from his life here on earth into his eternal rest in Heaven on Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2023, at St. John West Shore Hospital, Westlake, after battling complicated illnesses.

He was born May 30, 1950, in Thomasville, North Carolina, to Furman and Gertrude (Davis) Jackson. The young family moved him and his twin sister, Lorraine, to Sandusky at an early age. He attended Perkins and Sandusky Public Schools. He was a 1969 graduate of Sandusky High School where he excelled in football and track and it was in football that he earned the nickname "Crusher." In track, he was a member of the state champion 880-yard relay team setting the school record at 1.28 in his senior year, which led to his induction into the SHS Hall of Fame in 1999.

Lavon briefly attended Flint Junior College on a track scholarship before being drafted into U.S. Army, serving four years of active duty and 23 years in the Reserves, attaining the rank of Platoon Sergeant and Tank Commander. He retired from Ford Motor Co., Lorain and Avon plants, after 30 years of perfect attendance.

Lavon mentored young men and was active in many organizations such as American Legion, former Sgt. at Arms for UAW, The 100 Men of Lorain County, Lorain Police Auxiliary, and LCABSE of which he's a former President and Treasurer. Among his numerous accomplishments and accolades, they include the NAACP Living Black History Award, various athletic trophies, medals, and certificates of recognition for community service from the mayor, and senator and so many more. He also enjoyed hobbies such as watch collecting, buying gadgets, faithfully taking care of his home, detailing his vehicles, and watching sports. His memory will be cherished for his smile, laughter, and great love of family and friends.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 37 years, Bernadette; son, Pastor Jason of Lorain; twin sister, Lorraine Jackson of Jacksonville, North Carolina; brothers, Jerry Jackson of Sandusky and Michael Jackson of Trotwood; a host of cousins, nieces, and nephews; and life-time of friends who love him dearly.

Lavon was preceded in death by his beloved parents; sister, Faye; and son, Kenji.

Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 20, 2023, at Faith Ministries, 1306 Euclid Ave., Lorain, Ohio, 44052. Lavon's funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 21, 2023, at the church.
