Maralyn Hiatt Obituary

Maralyn E. Hiatt

Aug 4, 1926 - Feb 9, 2024

Huron

Maralyn E. Hiatt passed away peacefully surrounded by family Friday, Feb. 9, 2024, at Providence Care Center.

She was born Aug. 4, 1926, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to Merrill C. and Zelpha E. Yount.

Maralyn was a graduate of University of Cincinnati, majoring in metallurgical engineering and was often the only woman in her classes. She met her husband, William R. Hiatt, at UC and they married Dec. 27, 1950. They lived in Connecticut until their move to Huron in 1967 with New Departure Hyatt.

She was an avid reader, gardener, fan of Indiana University basketball, golfer, and master baker of chocolate chip cookies which fueled Bill and many cross-country and track races. Maralyn supported the athletic activities of her son and grandchildren attending events across Ohio. She enjoyed her daily walks and continued to go to The Gym in her 90s.

Maralyn worked crossword puzzles daily to keep her brain sharp and was addicted to Freecell. An early adopter of technology, she had a cell phone and SUV before her grandchildren.

After Bill's retirement, he and Maralyn traveled in a converted van and, during their lifetime together, visited all 50 states and all the Canadian provinces.

Family came first and she was always "there." Maralyn was a strong believer in education, echoing her mother saying "educate a man, you educate a man; educate a woman, you educate a family."

The family would like to thank the Providence Care Center Staff for their kind and loving care of Maralyn during her final years. She repeatedly said she was very content there.

Maralyn is survived by daughter, Anne (Gary) Hinton of Huron; granddaughters, Megan (Shawn) McClory of Hilliard, Alison Talcott of Dublin, and Lisa Hiatt (Raymond Molinar) of Pasadena, California; grandson, Matthew (Amanda) Hiatt of Sylvania; great-grandchildren, Sara, Jayna, Jackson, Maycee, Caleb, and Ruby; and daughter-in-law, Lauri Justen. She was the beloved aunt of Don Charles, Judy Charles, Janne Hicks, Julie Carrier, Jennifer Galloway, Sara Hiatt, Sherry Weeks, Russell Rider, and Paul Hiatt.

She was preceded in death by William, her husband of 62 years; son, David Hiatt; and sister, Barbara Charles.

Visitation will be 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 19, 2024, until the time of Maralyn's brief service at 11:30 a.m. at Foster Funeral Home & Crematory, 410 Main St., Huron, Ohio, 44839.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Huron Public Library, 333 Williams St., Huron.
