Marilyn Young McKinney, 88, passed away Saturday, Dec. 31, 2022.
Marilyn was born Nov. 22, 1934, in Sandusky, to Mary (Francis) and Louis Young. She graduated from Sandusky High School and St. Luke's School of Nursing in Cleveland. In the late 1950s, she drove across the country with a few nursing school classmates to pursue her nursing career in San Francisco, California. She met and married Richard McKinney in 1963 and they had two much loved daughters. After living briefly in Texas, they moved back to California, settling first in the Monterey Bay area and then in San Jose. After the marriage ended, she continued her career and devoted herself to her children.
Marilyn worked as a registered nurse at Alexian Brothers Hospital in San Jose for almost 28 years. In retirement, she bought a convertible and was able to devote time to her grandson, Sean, and the cats who adopted her. She was a loyal San Jose Sharks hockey fan from the start and enjoyed attending San Francisco Opera and other music performances. She also crocheted many gifts for friends and family, in addition to being an ardent reader of mystery and historical novels.
She is survived by two daughters, Martha McKinney and Beth Mosson; grandson, Sean Mosson; sister, Lois Doyle; nieces and nephews; and many dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Charles Young; and sister, Evelyn Behrendsen.
We would like to thank Dr. Mary James for her compassionate and skillful care for Mom during the past several years, Dr. Fayaz Asghar for his expertise, and Moana Filikitonga for her devotion, care, and friendship.
Marilyn's memorial service will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, 2023, at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church, 680 Leigh Ave., San Jose, California.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Darling & Fischer Garden Chapel.
If desired, memorial donations can be directed to Immanuel-Sobrato Community project, San Francisco Opera, San Jose Animal Care Center, or American Heart Association.
