Martha Cook Obituary

Martha M. Cook

May 5, 1924 - Jan 8, 2024

Bellevue

Martha M. Cook passed away Monday, Jan. 8, 2024 - just four months away from her 100th birthday - at Bellevue Care Center.

Martha was born May 18, 1924, to Maybelle M. (Loose) Coup and Samuel Louis Coup.

She was a 1942 graduate of York High School, serving as Senior Class Vice President. Her early jobs included working for AAA in Tiffin and for the Telephone Company in Bellevue. Later, she was homemaker. She also worked as Supervisor of Medical Records at Bellevue Hospital for several years and worked part-time in the offices of local doctors.

She married Robert E. Cook on May 3, 1947, and they shared a journey together until his sudden death in 1991. Martha was always a country gal and was most comfortable when in the country and on her farm, where she lived from the age of three years old. She greatly loved flowers, gardening, and "puttering" in the yard. She had a passion for all things artistic and creative and was a very talented artist. Her focus in the arts was music, in particular playing the piano and organ. She composed a few songs along the way. Over the course of about 65 years, she served as accompanist for countless soloists and singing groups at churches and other public functions and served as organist for weddings, funerals, and misc. special events. She was a life-long member of Seybert United Methodist Church (formerly Seybert Evangelical United Brethren Church) and became its organist back in 1963, a job which continued for 54 years. So dedicated was she that she rarely missed a Sunday service or any occasion when she was counted on to play. She also spent many years playing the antique organ at Detterman Log Church at Lyme Village for summer Sunday morning services, special Easter sunrise, and Christmas Eve services. Church for Martha included being a part of several committees and boards through the years as well. Martha was an animal lover and never was without a pet cat and or dog. Animals had been a part of her life since, in her childhood, her parents farmed with horse-drawn equipment and raised dairy cattle.

Martha is survived by her daughter, Wendy Cook-Scagnetti; son-in-law, David Scagnetti; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother, Emerson Coup; and some nieces and nephews.

At the request of the family, there will be no funeral or calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, if you choose to make a donation, please donate to Back to the Wild, Erie, or Sandusky County Humane Society, in her name. We want to thank the staff of Bellevue Care Center and Dr. Valone. Their help and kindness have been a big comfort to us.

I remember Martha fondly. She would also play for me at Seybert when I would come into town. She also painted me a beautiful stool and a Santa gourd which I proudly display. She was a wonderful woman and we were so blessed to know her. Sending love at Christmas.

I'm so sorry to hear of Martha's passing. She was such a wonderful woman with a beautiful heart. She was a wonderful organist and pianist for Seybert United Methodist Church.

Martha was a dear friend of our family. She played the organ at Seybert UMC for my wedding on June 15th, 1996!

The one thing I remember about Martha is how she played, "Christ the Lord is Risen Today," on the pipe organ at Seybert! The memory of her playing that song every Easter Sunday morning still remains in my heart!

With Deepest Sympathy,
