Sandusky
Michael D. Samstag, 72, residing in Sandusky, passed away peacefully Sunday, Oct. 15, 2023, following a lengthy illness at Stein Hospice Care.
Mike was born Sept. 19, 1951, in Sandusky, to Clarence J. Samstag Sr. and Louise (Mainzer) Samstag.
Mike graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1969 and received his Bachelor's Degree in Education from Defiance College in 1973. Mike excelled in baseball and football for the Panthers and continued his sporting career for the Yellow Jackets of Defiance College. He retired in 2013 after many years in the automotive industry. Mike was a member of St. Mary's Church. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing, spending time on the lake, metal detecting, golfing, and the Samstag family reunions. He was an avid Cleveland Browns and Cleveland baseball fan. He was also a big Ohio State Buckeyes and Notre Dame Fighting Irish football fan. His greatest joy was watching his children and grandchildren's sporting events. And he will have a front row seat for the younger grandchildren's events. He also enjoyed anytime spent with his family and friends.
Mike is survived by his daughter, Sarah (Joel) Richwagen of Orlando, Florida; son, Jason (Betsy) Samstag of Huron; four grandchildren, Everett, Alexa, Roxanne, and Samantha; sisters, Linda (Jay) Kelley of Hawaii, Judy Hoyt of Perrysburg, and Mary (Steve) Pisarski of Sandusky; brothers, Clarence "Babe" (Sara) Samstag Jr. and Joe (Colet) Samstag of Winterville, North Carolina; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary Beth (Link) Samstag; sisters, Ruth Ruthsatz and Janet Sadler; and brothers, Richard Samstag and Tom Samstag.
Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 21, 2023, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with Father Prashanth Kumar presiding. A celebration of life will immediately follow from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. Saturday at U.A.W. Local 913, 3114 Hayes Ave., Sandusky, Ohio, 44870.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Samstag Family Scholarship Fund in care of Sandusky Central Catholic School, 410 W. Jefferson Street, Sandusky, Ohio, 44870.
He wanted everyone to know he'll see you on the other side with a fishing pole and beer in hand.
