Nancy Fries Obituary

Nancy Elizabeth Fries

May 23, 1937 - Feb 10, 2023

Norwalk

Nancy Elizabeth Fries, 85, passed away Friday, Feb. 10, 2023.

She is survived by her loving husband, George Thomas; son, Christopher (Michelle); a daughter-in-law; five grandchildren; brother, Jerry Neuberger; nephew, Steve (Barb) Fries; and many Neuberger and Fries nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Virginia Neuberger; brother, Jim Neuberger; and son, Michael.

Nancy was a 1955 graduate of Monroeville High School and attended one year of college at Baldwin Wallace. Nancy and Tom were married in 1957, celebrating 65 years in July. She was a telephone operator and supervisor for Northern Ohio Telephone, then GTE (now Verizon) for 29 years, before working part-time as a teller for Norwalk Area Federal Credit Union. She was the busy mother of two boys who played football, basketball, and baseball as well as attending their scouting activities and musical concerts from grade school through high school.

The younger family enjoyed almost yearly vacation trips to New England, Washington D.C., Florida, Texas, Canada, and Yellowstone to name a few. All were driving trips allowing them to discover many sights along the way. As one son settled in Phoenix, Arizona, and the other in Cincinnati after earning degrees from Miami University and University of Texas, Tom and Nancy continued traveling for family visits. The couple visited every US state with only Hawaii left to see, even taking an Alaskan cruise after retiring. They ventured to England and Scotland with their granddaughter as a personal tour guide. Prior to her illness, Nancy attended high school graduations for all five grandchildren as well as seeing three receive their college degrees.

Nancy took great pride in her home and yard and hated leaving both when the time came to move to Cincinnati. She was an avid gardener and took care to keep her yard looking immaculate as one of gateway properties into the Countryside subdivision north of Norwalk. In the colder months, she was an avid reader, usually going through three or four books every two weeks from Norwalk Public Library. Her later years were spent in care of her aunt and uncle requiring many trips to Chillicothe.

Visitation will be 9-10 a.m. Saturday, March 4, 2023, at Evans Funeral Home, 314 E. Main Street, Norwalk. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 91 E. Main Street, Norwalk. A luncheon will follow in the church Gathering Space next to church.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made on Nancy's behalf to Norwalk Public Library (in person) or Dementia Society of America at dementiasociety.org.

I'm so sorry to hear about Nancy's passing. I worked with her at the credit union and she was the most personable, friendly co-worker and mentor.

I am so sorry to learn of Nancy's passing. I worked with Nancy at good old GTE for 21 years. She was always such a very nice and sweet co-worker. The photo is a beautiful photo of her. I always enjoyed running into Nancy and Tom when they were dining at Jim's Pizza in Milan and would have a brief Hello and also at our yearly reunion get-together at East of Chicago. May the following verse bring your family comfort during this difficult time. What must it be to step on shore and find it-HEAVEN;
To take hold of a hand and find it-GOD´S HAND;
To breathe new air and find it-CELESTIAL AIR;
To feel invigorated, and find it-IMMORTALITY;
To sail from the care and turmoil of earth
To one unbroken calm;
To land there and find it-GLORY.
