Raymond Joseph "Ray" Barman passed away June 27, 2023, at Commons of Providence Memory Care Unit after a brief illness.
Ray was born April 9, 1925, in Monroeville, to Roman Alfred and Elianore Katherine (Martin) Barman.
In June, 1942, Ray enlisted in U.S. Navy. After training in Great Lakes, Illinois, he was assigned onboard the USS LST 467 out of Camp Bradford in Norfolk, Virginia. He was honorably discharged in Feb., 1946, as a Quartermaster First Class, receiving the Victory Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Medal, and American Area Medal.
Ray and his wife, Mary (Peadon) of Norwalk, were married Nov. 9, 1946, and a year later, moved to Sandusky and joined Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church. Raymond was a loving husband and father to their four children.
In 1948, he began working at The Manhattan Clothing Company (currently J Bistro) as a stockboy. Earning many advancements over the years, in early 1960, he became owner of the company. In the mid 60s, the store was relocated to 238 Columbus Ave. (currently the Columbus Avenue Lofts). Over the next few years, he also opened storefronts in the Sandusky Mall and Tiffin Mall.
After closing The Manhattan, he continued his career as a haberdasher and worked at Lindsley's Men's Wear in Huron for several years. After hanging up his hat at Lindsley's, he drove for Kasper Buick until 2014 at age 89.
By the age of 83, Ray had donated more than 21 gallons of blood to American Red Cross. He was active in a variety of service organizations including the Exchange Club, Knights of Columbus, and Downtown Merchants Association. He volunteered as a poll worker for Erie County Board of Elections for many years and was an active member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.
In his spare time, he was an avid reader, enjoyed being with his family, traveling with Mary, working in the yard, bike riding, and swimming.
Ray will be sorely missed by his daughters, Karen Fuller, Kathy (Robin) Werner of Sandusky, and Krista (Michael) Kolinko of Castalia; son, Kim (Anne) Barman of Sandusky; grandchildren, Sherry Popke, Elizabeth Charville Heyer (Geoff), Brett Charville, Brittany Werner Ward (William), Carly Bard Pflieger (Kelly), Cody Bard Weldy (CJ), Kate Barman, and Molly Barman Bostic (Sean); great-grandchildren, Grant and Evelyn Heyer, Amelia Ward, Violet Roth, Jensen Pflieger, and Nora Bostic; furbaby grandaughter, Bailey; sister-in-law, Eileen Barman; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary in 2014; siblings, Marcella Pheiffer and her husband Edward, Alvin and his wife Helen, and Gilbert; and sister-in-law, Betty Barman.
Visitation will be 4:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 5, 2023, at David F. Koch Funeral and Cremation Services, 520 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. Prayers will be recited at 9:40 a.m. Thursday, July 6, 2023, at the funeral home followed by a Funeral Liturgy Outside of Mass at 10 a.m. at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, 510 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. Deacon Bill Burch will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Paul Catholic Cemetery, Norwalk. Military honors will be conducted by American Legion Post #83 and VFW Post #2529.
