Richard Donley Obituary

Richard Scofield Donley

Jan 2, 1950 - Dec 1, 2023

Pittsburgh, PA

Richard Scofield "Dick" Donley peacefully entered Heaven after a prolonged illness which he fought bravely and with the grace that comes only from God.

Born in Ashland, Ohio, Dick spent much of his childhood driving a pint-sized Lyman on Lake Erie with his buddies and learning to scuba dive with equipment inspired by Jacques Cousteau. He was a trumpeter in his high school marching band and even marched in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. He pursued squash, had a mean tennis serve, and his passion for water sports lasted a lifetime. He competed on the water ski team at University of Miami where Ann Carey Donahue introduced him to a young Maribeth Donahue and her Boston Whaler. It was a perfect match from the start.

Dick and Maribeth married on New Year's Eve, 1971, in a candlelit ceremony at St. Philomena Catholic Church in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. They settled in Pittsburgh and began their family as he worked at Westinghouse where he brokered many deals and re-financed his way in to the hearts of the business community with his jocularity, knowledge, and honesty. His work took him back and forth to London for a period of years in commercial real estate until he decided to start his own development company and subsequently won several Developer of the Year awards from NAIOP which is voted on by the premiere developers in the region.

Dick was a Presbyterian junior deacon as a young man and converted to Catholicism after many discussions with Father Bryce at St. Bede Church while fooling his family into thinking he was working on his classic car housed at the parish. His biggest hesitation was the fear that his beloved mother-in-law would ask him to don a crisp white suit for the occasion.

Dick was an avid hang glider, classic car enthusiast, wood worker, and all-around tinkerer. There wasn't a single thing in need of repair that he couldn't rehabilitate with his extensive tool collection in the workshop of the basement garage.

Dick never stopped scuba diving or driving a Lyman with his buddies. When he was diving on Grand Cayman Island with Maribeth and good friends or cruising Lake Erie in his treasured wooden boat, the sparkle in his eyes easily revealed the little boy from Ashland living his dream.

Dick was a true gentleman. He loved his family and friends, was a faithful husband to his wife, a stellar provider to her and their children, and brought his sense of humor with him wherever he went. He was quick to laugh and even quicker to offer a helping hand. He supported his children's and grandchildren's pursuits and had a sentimental, generous heart. He will be dearly missed.

He is survived by his wife, Maribeth Donahue Donley; eight children on Earth, Megan (James) Stella, David, Richard (Melissa), Reverend Christopher, Rhodora (Scott) Huffmyer, John O'Connor (Sara), Maura (Matthew) Rheingrover, and Kaitlyn; 17 grandchildren on Earth, David Paul III, Marissa, Elizabeth, Christopher, Richard Scofield III, Madelyn, Caila, Isabella, Liliana, Scott Jr., Brynne, Tyler, Gabriella, Penelope, Zita, Avila, and Emilia; sisters, Suzanne Donley, and Deborah (Robert) Quane; niece, Maggie Quane (engaged to Brian O'Malley); 12 brothers and sisters-in law; Outlaw crew (their spouses); 74 nieces and nephews and their spouses; and 158 great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, David P. and Janet Donley; parents-in-law, John F. and Rhodora J. Donahue; dear friend, Parmalee Jones; daughters, Heather and Melissa; grandson, St. Conlan Matthew Rheingrover; and brother-in-law, Harry Dooley.

Visitation for friends will be 1-4 p.m. Monday, Dec. 4, 2023, and 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2023, at John A. Freyvogel Sons, Inc., 4900 Centre Avenue at Devonshire Street, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, 15213, freyvogelfuneralhome.com. Dick's funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2023, at Mass of Christian Burial Divine Mercy Parish, Epiphany Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to his favorite charities, Move A Mountain Missions at www.moveamountain.org, The Red Door at www.divinemercypgh.org, or Gift of Mary at www.giftofmary.org.

Hey MaryBeth,
So sorry to hear of Dick's passing. Of all the comments I've read I'm surprised no one mentioned Dick's, Red Ambulance. I can remember Dick cruising the University of Miami campus, red light and all. I think Ghost Busters would have given anything to have it. The only complaint I ever heard was that the doors weighed a ton and if you slammed one it would break the glass in the window. How many people could you fit in that thing. Evidently he had to replace windows more than once. I can remember an afternoon he took me water skiing and he tried to teach me to run a slalom course the ski team had set up. Total failure on my part but Dick kept trying.
I can never remember a time he didn't have a smile on his face and was always glad to see you.

I first knew Dick as a grade school chum. We lived fairly close by and would go to Free Field's woods to the creek and hunt for critters. I lost track of Dick eons ago but happy to hear it sounds like he lived a good full life. Thoughts to all of his family. Peace, Nancy Wasen

Dick was a good man and treated me always with respect. I worked at the marina we're Dick kept his Wood Lyman. What a pleasure to have a customer like Dick. Who then became my friend and talked about a lot of different things and got a chance to meet his wife. And his grandchildren and his sons who all loved boating.. Knowing Dick and Maribeth was a pleasure talking about birds getting inside the boat house or all the youngster waterskiing and how Dick would direct the young men that were on the boat with him how to respect people at the gas dock .What a valued treasure. God bless my friend Dick!!!!

I will always remember Dick driving his Lyman, with the biggest, brightest smile on his face. I was so impressed with his performance on waterskis, bare footing, and with his kite. He was instrumental in why I loved waterskiing so very much, and learned to slalom. Just watching him, and seeing how much he enjoyed the sport. My deepest sympathy to you, Beth, and you entire family. Elaine Blackmore

Mr. Donley has always welcomed me into his home like one of his own kids! I love the Donley family with my entire heart. I remember one time when I was visiting he un-knotted a tangled necklace of mine. It´s a small memory but one that I remember fondly. Mr. Donley, I can´t picture your face without a big smile on it, and I think that says something special about who you are. Sending love and aloha to you in heaven.

Dick and I grew up in Ashland together. Our parents were close friends. We were both Presbyterians growing up.

Over the past couple years we reunited via text. I will dearly miss him. So sorry for our loss.

In a world leaning towards the more coarse and transactional, Dick was the epitome of exactly the opposite. Character, faith and integrity underpinned his interactions with all who knew him. If you spent any length of time with Dick and didn't come away thinking of him as a friend, your life is the poorer for it. You could disagree with Dick (rarely) but he was never disagreeable.
My heartfelt sympathies to all in his family and all who knew him.
He will be sorely missed by everyone but his example and generous spirit will live on long into the future.

Dick was a great brother in law and a good friend. I´m so grateful to have had him in my life. I smile when I remember the chef boyardee hamburger and cheddar cheese pizzas he used to proudly make ! He taught me to trick ski on his blue boat at the lake. So many wonderful memories of the lake and 4th of July bike parade etc. Dick will be sorely missed. Much love to you my brother and welcome to the heavenly banquet. Carol
