Roy Werner Obituary

Roy W. Werner

Sep 29, 1929 - May 7, 2024

Sandusky

Roy W. Werner, 94, sadly left us to join his loved ones in Heaven on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, at Parkview Healthcare Center, Sandusky, after several years of dealing with Dementia.

Roy was born Sept. 20, 1929, in Sandusky, to Erwin George and Elvira Alma (Schiller) Werner. He and his sister, Joan, who was very close in age, both graduated from Sandusky High School in 1948. Given their tight age gap, people often thought they were twins.

After high school, Roy was the kind of guy who'd scrape together some change excited to catch a Cleveland Indians game with his best buddy, Bob Benkey, who preceded him in death. You could always count on finding him cheering on the Browns, Indians, and of course, The Ohio State Buckeyes. He was most well-known for being a kind and simple man who touched the heart of everyone he met.

Roy was a veteran of U.S. Army who proudly served his country from 1951-1953 at Camp Hanford in Washington state. He then served another five years in the reserves. Glad to be back home in Sandusky, he wasted no time marrying the love of his life, Lucille Engel, in 1955. Roy worked as a press operator at Universal Clay Products for over thirty years. He also enjoyed his time being a member of the local Amvets.

Roy was a family man and his fondest memories come from spending time with family. Throughout his life, amusement parks were one of his favorite pleasures. He spent most of his time enjoying Cedar Point with his wife and family. After his wife's passing in 1982, he continued the tradition with his children, grandchildren, and friends, and also taking many vacations to other amusement parks as well.

His love of sweets often got him into trouble with relatives. He had quite the loving rivalry with his son-in-law, Bill, over fudge, pies, donuts, you name it. They would buy treats with the intent of splitting them the next morning, only to have Roy get up in the middle of the night and eat the entire dessert.

He also loved a good joke and many family friends found him a great target for practical jokes. There was never a dull moment with Roy and his family.

Roy is survived by his daughter, Debra Whipkey of Newark, Ohio; sons, Rob (Kathy) Werner of Sandusky and Troy (Cathy) Werner of Vermilion; niece, Tammy (Craig) Homegardner of Sandusky; seven grandchildren, Brittany (William) Ward, Beth Heyer, Brett Charville, Valerie Werner, Jennifer (Nathan) Finken, Bradley Beatty, and Elizabeth (Charles) Gresham; and nine great-grandchildren, Amelia Ward, Grant and Evelyn Heyer, Taylor, Hunter, and Grady Finken, Landon Beatty, Kaitlyn Whipkey, and Kyler Gresham.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lucille (Engel) Werner in 1982; son-in-law, Bill Whipkey; and sisters, Joan (Ward) Billings and infant sister, Jane Werner.

Visitation for friends will be 5-8 p.m. Thursday, May 9, 2024, and 10 a.m. Friday, May 10, 2024, until the time of Roy's funeral at 11 a.m., all at Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky. Mel Saylor will preside. Burial will follow at Meadow Green Memorial Park, Huron.

Those wishing to contribute to Roy's memory may do so to one's favorite charity or Parkvue Nursing Home, 3800 Boardwalk Blvd., Sandusky, Ohio, 44870.
