Suzanne Bacon Obituary

Suzanne Bacon

Dec 10, 1927 - Jun 2, 2023

Huron

Suzanne Oliver Bacon, 95, of Huron, passed away peacefully Friday, June 2, 2023, at Parkvue Healthcare Center after a brief illness.

She was born in Columbus, the daughter of Glenn F. and Lucille S. Oliver and sister to her older brother, Glenn Jr. ("Newie"). There, she attended The University School and The Ohio State University, where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority. At Ohio State, she met John L. Bacon, a returning World War II Navy veteran who was studying business and they were married there in 1948. Following his Ohio State graduation, they moved to Sandusky where they lived until 1963, after which time they resided in Huron.

In living her deep faith, she was a cheerful, thoughtful, and generous spirit who enjoyed and raised the spirits of those around her. She devoted her life to supporting and encouraging her family as well as showing care for others in the community. She was a dedicated Cub Scout and Girl Scout leader and made herself available to be present in every way possible to support and encourage the educational pursuits of her children. She was well known for her cooking and for young ones (and not-so-young ones, for that matter), she was particularly famous for her homemade applesauce and macaroni and cheese. Her children and their friends retain fond memories of the "themed" birthday parties she had for them as they advanced through their years. She made young ones always welcome in her home and in their minds, her thoughtful, caring nature for them was rivaled only by the candy drawer she maintained for their personal selections on every visit.

Beyond the home, she cared for others in her community through decades of service as an American Red Cross "Gray Lady" at the former Good Samaritan Hospital, followed by many years as a board member of American Red Cross of Erie County. She also supported philanthropic efforts as a over 70-year member of P.E.O. Sisterhood, Sandusky Chapter BE.

Growing up in the shadows of Ohio State and having a brother, "Newie," who played as starting halfback for the Buckeyes in the mid-40s, she was an avid Ohio State football fan who attended many classic games over the years. Following her move to Sandusky, she became a devoted boater, enjoying many trips to the Lake Erie islands with her family and friends and in later years, extended vacations with husband John to Lake Huron and the Trent-Severn Waterway leading to Georgian Bay. Closer to home, she developed a love for gardening and became known for the beautiful roses she grew throughout the summer and shared with family and friends. And in sports, she became a tennis player in her later years and enjoyed doubles with husband John and their friends throughout the year in Sandusky and during winter months in Naples, Florida.

She is survived by her son, John O. Bacon of Sandusky; daughter, Marcia L.B. Wilkinson (Erby) of Spring Hill, Tennessee; six grandchildren, Eva, Luke, Margo, Melanie, Lauren, and Allison; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and loving husband of 58 years, John.

There will be no visitation and memorial services will be private with arrangements by Foster Funeral Home & Crematory, Huron.

Dear John O and Marcia
I am so sorry to learn of your mother´s passing. She and your dad and my parents had some great times together. I remember when my parents and my sister and I would visit Sandusky and Cedar Point. Your mother had a wonderful life and dearly loved her family. Diane Skidmore- Dailey (Uncle Bud and Aunt Sally´s daughter)

Suzi Bacon had such a kind soul, I remember telling her I was pregnant with my son that is now two and a half and she was so excited for a new baby to be around. We didn't know the gender yet but she always checked on me while I worked. Such a wonderful woman

It saddens my heart to know we´ve lost yet another amazing person in this world. I stand however, secure in my heart knowing that Susie and John are again reunited in Heaven and smiling down on each of us. Our sympathy and prayers remain with their children John and Marcia.

Growing up as a young boy, our families were blessed to have had such genuine friends in our life. Susie and her husband John will remain a lasting fixture in my childhood memory.

With all my love,

James (Jimmy) Holzaepfel
