Velda J. (Kughman) Ries, 69, residing in Huron, passed away Monday, June 3, 2024, surrounded by her family at Stein Hospice Care Center after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Velda was born Nov. 28, 1954, in Petoskey, Michigan, to George E. and Mabel L. (Chapin) Kughman.

Velda was a 1973 graduate of Petoskey High School. She worked in customer service at Firelands Vending in Sandusky for 25 years and was the co-owner of Cardinal Coffee Systems in Sandusky with her husband, Tom, for over 20 years. Velda was a proud member of Odawa Native American Tribe. She loved her Macaws birds, Teko & Cheroke, her feathered children. Velda enjoyed corvettes, gardening (especially taking care of plants), nature, walking trails, puzzles, and spending time in Florida.

Velda is survived by her husband of 37 years, Tom Ries; two stepsons, Eddie Ries of Sandusky and Patrick Ries of Florida; four grandchildren, Noah, Tyler, Sophie, and Mikayla; two sisters, Del (George) Mitchell of Perrysburg and Lucy Rich of Michigan; two brothers, John (Gail Neidling) Kughman and David Kughman, both of Michigan; niece, Kaylee (Caleb) Courter of Michigan; three nephews, Brian Kughman of Colorado, Scott (Ashley) Kughman of Michigan, and Jonathan (Brook) Rich of Michigan; father-in-law, Edward (Grace) Ries of Avon; two sisters-in-law, Kathy Friebis-Moras of Sandusky and Shauna (Genna) Ries of Colorado; eight longtime close friends, Bette Roe, Debrah "Whip" Bauer, Darla Woodward, Chrissy Huffman, Cindy Bowers, Cheri Newton, Robin Gosser, and Kathy Baum; and numerous great-nieces, great-nephews, and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and stepfather, Gilbert Neidling.

Visitation for friends will be 2-5 p.m. Saturday, June 8, 2024, at Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky. Velda's graveside service will be 2:30 p.m. Monday, June 10, 2024, at Greenwood Cemetery, 105 Greenwood Cemetery Road, Petoskey, Michigan, 49770.
