Anne McDermond Obituary

Anne (Frankel) McDermond

Dec 5, 1946 - Jan 19, 2024

Sandusky

Anne Tracy (Frankel) McDermond, 77, of Sandusky, passed away Friday, Jan. 19, 2024, after battling Parkinson's disease and breast cancer for the past 10 years.

Anne was born Dec. 5, 1946, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Sandusky, to Bill and Betty Frankel. After graduating from Sandusky High School in 1964, she studied elementary education at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, where she was a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority and president of DePauw's Panhellenic Council. While at DePauw, Anne met Lee McDermond. Immediately following her graduation, Anne and Lee were married June 15, 1968, at Grace Episcopal Church in Sandusky. After their wedding, Anne and Lee resided in Bloomington, Indiana. Anne taught elementary school for two years while Lee finished law school. After Lee completed law school, the couple moved back to Sandusky in 1970. Anne taught at her alma mater, Hancock Elementary School, for two years before starting a family. Anne and Lee had three children, Mac, Megan, and Sarah, whom she stayed at home to care for over the next 15 years. In the late 1980s, Anne gradually returned to teaching and continued her own education, earning her special education teaching certification. Anne was a much-loved special education teacher at Meadowlawn Intermediate School, where many of her students called her "Grandma."

Anne was universally loved by her family, friends, and colleagues at all stages of her life. She was blessed with unending kindness, thoughtfulness, and graceful charm. She was famous for her dry wit and sense of humor. Anne and her husband always believed humor was the secret to their long and loving marriage of nearly 56 years.

She is survived by her husband; their three children, Mac McDermond (his wife Teresa and their boys, Oliver and Liam), Megan Preble (her husband Bill and their fraternal twins, William and Caroline), and Sarah Henken (her husband Matt and their identical twins, Eleanor and Miriam); siblings, Elizabeth (Grant) Walls, John (Nanette) Frankel, and Charlie (Lisa) Frankel; seven nieces; five nephews; 10 great-nieces; and 13 great-nephews. Anne and Lee loved and were loved by their in-laws and thought of them all as parents and siblings.

Anne was preceded in death by her parents; and oldest brother, Bill Frankel.

Visitation for friends will be 4-7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26, 2024, at Groff Funeral Home, 1607 E. Perkins Avenue, Sandusky. Tracy's memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, 2024, at Grace Episcopal Church. Father Seth Wymer will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Firelands Regional Medical Center, 1111 Hayes Ave., Sandusky, Ohio, 44870, The Sandusky Library, 114 West Adams St., Sandusky, Ohio, 44870, Grace Episcopal Church, 315 Wayne St., Sandusky, Ohio, 44870, or charitable organization of your choice.

Anne was a special patient I knew and cared for some years ago, with a sense of wit and charm that could brighten anyone's day. The twinkle in her eyes told everyone she was a genuine person, you could trust and never doubt. Thanks Lee, Megan, Mac, and Sara, for sharing her with us.
