Benjamin Lauber Obituary

Benjamin Lauber

Jul 20, 1937 - Oct 9, 2025

Huron

Benjamin Albert Lauber, 88 of Huron, passed away peacefully Thursday, October 9, 2025, at ProMedica Toledo Hospital. He had pneumonia and then a stroke and passed with his family by his side.

Ben was born July 20, 1937, in Erie County, Sandusky, Ohio. Ben's loving parents were Florence and Albert Lauber of Sandusky.

Ben was blessed with a large, loving family. Remaining to cherish Ben's memory are his three children from his first marriage, Jody Sneed, Lisa Schmutz and Derek Lauber. His second marriage was to the late Jane Culik-Lauber. Ben raised Jane's daughter, Kathryn (Katie) Wandel, as his own. He had seven grandchildren, Stephanie, Gerilyn, Shannon, Chad, Magnus, Brokk, and Cora. He was also blessed with one great-granddaughter, Paisley.

Ben and Barbara Fox were united in a commitment ceremony in Oscoda, Michigan, September 7, 2021. Ben and Barb were high school sweethearts and reunited when they were both in their 80s. They were as in love as they were in high school, a true love story. He immediately became a part of her family and was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by all her children. Barb's daughters, Lisa and Kim and Barb's "adopted" daughter Jeanne, a close family friend, and sons Ken and Dean, were all deeply cherished by him.

Ben graduated from Sandusky High School, then went to Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, and Bowling Green State University, earning his BA. He later earned his MA at Vermont College.

Ben touched the lives of so many. He was a Dedicated Teacher and department head for physical education, art, and music at Northville High School in Michigan. He also coached the high school cross country team.

Telling Ben's story would not be complete without acknowledging his role as a swimming coach. For many years, he was a coach for swim teams at Northville and Farmington Hills in Michigan. His most treasured coaching experiences were with his swimmers at Northville High School, where he coached the 1973 Boys' Michigan State Championship team. The team is a family. They had just celebrated a combination Swim Team reunion and 88th Birthday Celebration in July for Ben. What a blessing it was to have everyone together to celebrate an honored coach and a phenomenal human being.

Preceding Ben in death was his son, Gary Lauber.

Ben was, and is still, loved and admired by all who met him and will be living on in the hearts of so many people.

A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date.

Memorial contribu-tions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Back to the Wild.

Bennie and I were on the Sandusky High School swimming team together in the mid-1950s. Coach Caldwell was said to have named Bennie as the best swimmer he ever coached. He was a tremendous teammate that could swim every stroke and was the OHSAA state champion in the 150 yd. individual Medley in 1955. He and I swam on the 150 yd. Medley Relay during that season. He was a humble and very kind person; we all admired him. RIP Bennie.
