Bernard John "Bernie" Neidler, 87, of Sandusky, passed away Thursday, July 27, 2023, at Firelands Regional Medical Center after a sudden illness.

He was born Nov. 16, 1935, in Castalia, to John and Pauline (Kardatzke) Neidler.

Bernie graduated from Sandusky High School in 1953. He worked for Lyman Boats and learned the craft of woodworking. He was a veteran of U.S. Army National Guard and proudly served his country. He continued that service to his community as a police officer for the Sandusky Police Department for 25 years, retiring in 1989. Bernie was a member of National Fraternal Order of Police. In his spare time, he enjoyed camping, woodworking and finishing, and writing opinionated letters to the Sandusky Register's Reader's Forum.

Bernie is survived by his wife, Mary Ann (Roeser) Neidler, whom he married Feb. 18, 1956; son, Jerry (Cindy) Neidler of Bay View; daughters, Joanne Browne of Sandusky, Jody Cooper of Milan, and Julie Sosa of Huron; grandsons, Ty Neidler, Adam (Leslie) Davis, Evan (Lauren) Neidler, and Dustin (Jay) Mattlin; granddaughters, Lacy (Roger) Barnett, Allison Neidler, Kristen Buder, and Jaelyn Sosa; 11 great-grandchildren; sister, Janet Frank of Sandusky; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Bernie was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters, Elaine Andres and Karen Cummings.

At Bernie's request, cremation has taken place. Visitation for friends will be 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 4, 2023, until the time of Bernie's memorial service at 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 502 Bardshar Rd., Sandusky. Bernie will be inurned at the Trinity Lutheran Church columbarium.
