Dean R. Howman, 82, of Sandusky, died Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2022, at his residence surrounded by his family.

He was born May 3, 1940, in Sandusky, to the late Lyndon and Anna (Hall) Howman. Dean was a 1958 graduate of Sandusky High School and earned an associate degree from Owens Community College. He served in U.S Navy from 1958-1962 and became a lifelong member of American Legion. Dean worked as a Sandusky firefighter for 27 years, becoming Assistant Fire Chief in 1978 and Interim Chief in 1991 before his retirement.

Dean was a founding member of Sandusky Area Maritime Association and remained an active board member until his death. Dean was instrumental in the Association's annual Big Splash Raffle fundraiser and in 2012 the Association dedicated their new building as Howman Boat House.

Dean is survived by his wife of 37 years, Candia Howman; children, Dean (Beth) Howman, Melinda (Wayne) Yerdon, Jeff Howman, Jen (Jimmy) Sumser, and Jon (Stephanie) Lawrence; grandchildren, Adam, Meagan, Abbey, Sasha, Adrian, Wayne Jr., Amanda, Leah, Erin, Jakob, Jillian, Joe, and Sam; nine great-grandchildren; siblings, Linda (Al) Sender, Pat McClellan, Cathy (Rich) Schlesselman, and Gary (Cathy) Howman; mother-in-law, Nancy Sharpe; brothers-in-law, Jim (Cathy) Sharpe, John Sharpe, Dan Sharpe, and George Sharpe; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother-in-law, Bob McClellan; father-in-law, Jim Sharpe; and nephew, Michael McClellan.

Friends may call 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2022, at Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, 2001 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. The firefighters will have their Last Alarm Service at 6:45 p.m.

Dean's funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2022, at the funeral home with Deacon Phil Dinovo officiating. American Legion Post 83 and V.F.W. Post 2529 honor guard will have the military tribute.
