Eugene Leavell Obituary

Eugene Leavell

Apr 7, 1931 - Feb 29, 2024

Sandusky

Eugene "Gene" Douglas Leavell ascended to his Heavenly Home on Thursday, Feb. 29, 2024, at Firelands Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.

Gene was born April 7, 1931, in Sandusky, the son of Anderson and Della (Walker) Leavell. Gene was a member of Second Baptist Church. He attended Sandusky High School and graduated with the class of 1949. During his years in high school, he participated in basketball and track. He qualified two years for the state track meet in field events.

After graduating from SHS, he worked at Armour Fertilizer for a short time. He left Armour for a job at Philco Corporation. Gene volunteered for U.S. Air Force where he received an honorable discharge. After leaving the service, he was employed by Vulcan Material.

Gene enjoyed hunting and fishing as well as watching The Ohio State Buckeyes and Cleveland Browns on TV. He also enjoyed sharing the history of Sandusky to younger family members or anyone that would listen. Gene lived a long and productive life.

Leaving to cherish his memory are his sister, Betty June (Leavell) Johnson of Erie, Pennsylvania; brother, Daniel I. Leavell Sr. of Sandusky; stepson, John S. (Simone) Butler of Sandusky; Thomas Williamson of Port Clinton; grandchildren, Lisa Davidson, LaQinta Hearn, Thomas Johnson, Natasha Butler, and Tayjion Butler; special great-grandson, Anthony Henson Jr.; nieces, Deanna C. Leavell and April Ratcliffe (Walter) and Cheryl Johnson (Henry), both of Cleveland; nephews, Daniel I. Leavell Jr., Douglas C. Leavell, and Gregory C. Leavell of New Orleans, Louisiana; sisters-in-law, Angela Leavell (Leonard) of New Orleans, Louisiana, and LaDoris Leavell (Leonard) of Brunswick, Georgia; and several more nieces, nephews, and grandchildren.

Eugene was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Beulah Mae; sisters, Greta L. Marcus (Willie), Mamie E. Leavell, Rebecca B. Leavell, and infant Leavell; brothers, Charles E. (Thelma), Walker A. (Janice), Lewis C. (Aleatha), and Leonard L. (Angela, LoDoris); and sister-in-law, Lovey A. (Daniel) Leavell.

A special thank you to the staff at Admiral's Point Nursing and Rehabilitation Center where Gene lived his final years.
