Harry C. McGookey, 93, residing in Sandusky, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2022, at Firelands Regional Medical Center following a brief illness.

Harry was born Feb. 9, 1929, in Sandusky, to the late Giles Ray and Marie (Troike) McGookey. He was a 1947 graduate of Sandusky High School. After serving as an electrical apprentice, he worked at New Departure Hyatt for 30 years as an electrician.

Together with his wife, Doris, Harry was co-founder and co-owner of two Kiddie Korral Preschool and Child Development Centers in Sandusky.

Harry was an avid boater and enjoyed fishing in Lake Erie as well as Gulf of Mexico. He spent many years golfing and bike riding. He enjoyed vacationing and spending time with family and friends on Sanibel Island, Fort Myers, Florida, and Gaylord, Michigan.

A current member of Sandusky Yacht Club, Harry was also member of Sts. Peter and Paul Church. He is a former member of Plum Brook County Club and Elks BPO 285, where he also served as Exalted Ruler. He also served several years as a Board Member for Vacationland Federal Credit Union.

Harry married his high-school sweetheart, Doris (Steinen) McGookey, on Aug. 27, 1949, and together, just celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary.

Harry is survived by his loving wife, Doris; four children, James (Anne) McGookey, Dr. Patrick (Kimberly) McGookey, Dan (Bev) McGookey, and Gail (Frank) Stoy; 10 grandchildren he loved and enjoyed, Ryan McGookey, Leigh Johnson, Lauren Sturdivant, Beth Ferguson, Michael McGookey, Caroline DeMario, Ellen Bartolett, Thomas McGookey, Nick Maschari, and Kurt Maschari; and six great-grandchildren he was blessed with, Ryder, Quinn, Reese, Camden, Reid, and Bennett.

In addition to his parents, Harry was preceded in death by his sisters, Patricia Peters and Alice Browne; and brothers, Giles McGookey and Robert McGookey.

Friends may call 9 a.m. Friday, Sept. 2, 2022, until time of Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, 510 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. Father Jacob George will officiate. Private family burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, Sandusky. Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory is assisting family with arrangements.
