Herman Dyer, 89, a resident of Parkway Drive in Salyersville, Kentucky, passed away Saturday, Oct. 5, 2024, at his home.

He was born June 17, 1935, in Salyersville, Kentucky, the son of Beverige and Bertha Williams Dyer.

Herman proudly served his country in U.S. Army until he was honorably discharged. He was a veteran of the Korean War in the 1st Infantry Division with a rank of Specialist Second Class. Ford Motor Company in Sandusky employed him for 33 years until his retirement. He also worked in law enforcement as a detective and undercover officer for a vast amount of years and Deputy Coroner in the Magoffin County Coroners Office. After retirement, him and his wife, Lois Arnett Dyer, returned to Salyersville, Kentucky to own and operate Salyersville Funeral Home. He was the pillar to his family, often called "The White Knight," and tried to give more of himself to others than himself. He was a dedicated Christian and often was found reading the Bible to watching the various Christian Gospel and Bluegrass shows on the television and radio. His wife was his life and he fought to his death to protect and be with her.

Those left to mourn includes his wife of 69 years, Lois Arnett Dyer of Salyersville, Kentucky; two daughters, Sandra Cummings and husband, Jim, of Castalia and Vanessa Zeller and husband, Douglas Sr., of Fredonia, New York; four grandchildren, Brian Michael Parker of Salyersville, Kentucky, Amanda Parker (Geoff LaMarca) of Castalia, Allison Kwilos (Jacob) of Forestville, New York, and Douglas Zeller Jr. (Michelle) of Silver Creek, New York; great-grandchildren, Kaylin Griffin, Jesse Kwilos, Hannah Kwilos, Mayleigh Mathews, Trinity Parker, Avalyn Kwilos, Liam Zeller, Pierce Parker, Zofia Zeller, Killian Zeller, and Amelia Zeller; two sisters, Ester Maddox (Bill) of Sandusky and Connie Howard of Richmond, Kentucky; two brothers, Gerald Dyer (Phyllis) of Mount Sterling, Kentucky, and Paul James Dyer (Jean) of Middletown; sister-in-law, Henrietta Dyer of Castalia, Rosetta Dyer of Middletown, and Donna Whitaker of Salyersville, Kentucky; three caregivers and friends, Teresa Bailey, Barbie Hackworth, and Diane Fletcher; and a host of family and friends who love and miss him.

Herman was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Mildred Dyer, Eula Howard, and Nevil Dyer; and brothers, Earl Dyer, Arnold J. Dyer, Virgil Dyer, Vernon Dyer, and Newell Dyer.

Herman's funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, 2024, at the chapel of Salyersville Funeral Home. Clergy Ben Martin will deliver comforting words on the day of services. Entombment will follow at Bluegrass Cemetery in Salyersville, Kentucky. The family will welcome friends Wednesday, October 9, after 1 p.m. and anytime Thursday prior to the service. Masonic Rites will be conducted at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. The Magoffin County Chapter D.A.V. will give military rites during services.

Contributions can be made to Alzheimer's Association or Magoffin County Chapter disabled veterans of America.

I was a 5 month supervisor at Ford and Herman was in my department. We had many conversations about his home town in Kentucky. His lovely wife, he shared beautiful stories of his life. It was my pleasure to know him. My condolences to his wife and children.
