Jacob Julian Ashburn

Sep 23, 1950 - Dec 20, 2025

Columbus

Dr. Jacob Julian Ashburn was born September 23, 1950, in Sandusky. He peacefully departed this life Sunday, December 20, 2025, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

Dr. Ashburn was a devoted husband, father, scholar, and servant of knowledge. He shared 50 blessed years of marriage with his beloved wife, Patricia Ashburn. He was a proud and loving father to his cherished daughter, Joanna Ashburn, affectionately known as his "princess," who brought immeasurable joy to his life.

He leaves to cherish his precious memory his loving wife, Patricia Ashburn; his daughter, Joanna Ashburn; siblings, Sister Elder Jennifer Ashburn of Sandusky, James Ronald Ashburn of Toledo, Alfred Harold Ashburn of Indianapolis, Indiana, Joey (Tiffany) Ashburn of Raleigh, North Carolina, Aaron Ashburn of Akron, Carolyn Henderson of Sandusky, and Ella Mae Baker of Sandusky. He is also survived by his nieces, Olivia Ashburn, Nyia Ashburn, and Brianna Ashburn; his nephew, Spencer Ashburn; his best friend, Don Dixon; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

Dr. Ashburn was preceded in death by his father, Rev. Richard R. Ashburn Sr.; Gene Holmes Ashburn; Dr. Exie B. Ashburn; and his brother, Richard R. Ashburn Jr.

A lifelong learner and educator, Dr. Ashburn earned his Doctorate in Philosophy of Education from The Ohio State University. He was the author of Race, Morality, and Public School Policy (published in 1993), a work that reflected his deep commitment to justice, education, and moral responsibility. His intellectual passions were grounded in philosophical study, particularly Problems of Philosophy by Bertrand Russell, which greatly influenced his thinking.

During his youth, Dr. Ashburn excelled in wrestling and basketball and later served as Editor of Sandusky High, demonstrating leadership and academic excellence early in life. Reading and studying were lifelong passions, and he found great joy in music, reflection, and thoughtful dialogue.

Dr. Ashburn was known for his dedication, compassion, integrity, and unwavering commitment to his family and profession. He lived a life of purpose, service, and love, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the honor of knowing him.

Though he has transitioned from this earthly life, his legacy will forever live on through the lives he touched, the knowledge he shared, and the love he gave so freely.

You were my favorite uncle, and I will never forget you.
You taught me chess and checkers, and how to play tennis. And many Ice cream.
You never treated me differently.
You went out of your way to learn my language so you could communicate with me.
You even brought a closed-captioning device so I could watch TV better with English subtitle.
Because of you, my world opened up in a bigger way.
Thank you, Uncle Jake.
I will always cherish our moments together.
With love,
Anika

I taught with Jake Ashburn at both Walnut Ridge HS and South HS in Columbus. Jake was a brilliant, kind, and thoughtful colleague. His students loved and revered him. Truly saddened to hear of his passing.

I was fortunate to have Jake as a professor while getting my master's in the 80s through the University if Dayton. He was one of the best! Too often graduate-level classes, particularly in education, are not very rigrous. That, however, was not the case in Jake's, and I loved it! I was also so glad when my nephew, who is also a CPS English teacher, worked with Jake at West HS. To this day, he considers him a mentor. I am so sorry for your loss, which is also ours. He made a difference...
