You were my favorite uncle, and I will never forget you.
You taught me chess and checkers, and how to play tennis. And many Ice cream.
You never treated me differently.
You went out of your way to learn my language so you could communicate with me.
You even brought a closed-captioning device so I could watch TV better with English subtitle.
Because of you, my world opened up in a bigger way.
Thank you, Uncle Jake.
I will always cherish our moments together.
With love,
Anika

I taught with Jake Ashburn at both Walnut Ridge HS and South HS in Columbus. Jake was a brilliant, kind, and thoughtful colleague. His students loved and revered him. Truly saddened to hear of his passing.

I was fortunate to have Jake as a professor while getting my master's in the 80s through the University if Dayton. He was one of the best! Too often graduate-level classes, particularly in education, are not very rigrous. That, however, was not the case in Jake's, and I loved it! I was also so glad when my nephew, who is also a CPS English teacher, worked with Jake at West HS. To this day, he considers him a mentor. I am so sorry for your loss, which is also ours. He made a difference...
