Crystal Rock

James B. "Jim" Johnson, 97, of Crystal Rock, died Saturday, May 6, 2023, at Admirals Point, Huron.

He was born Feb. 5, 1926, in Cranesnest, Virginia, to William and Myrtle Freeman Johnson. He enlisted in U.S. Navy in 1943 and proudly served on the LST 964 as a gunners mate until being discharged in 1946. He earned several metals while on duty, including WWII Victory, and American, Asiatic, Pacific, China Service, and Occupation Service Campaigns. His passion was his family, music, and Lord, Jesus Christ. In the late 50s, he and his brother, Ray, and friend, Hobe Lawson, traveled to area churches as a gospel quartet. He loved playing his guitar, piano, and harmonica, and was especially proud of his grandson Derek's guitar playing ability. He also loved to fish and was proud to teach his grandson, Stephen, to fish too.

He was an avid baseball fan, especially Cleveland Indians and Bob Feller. He coached youth baseball in the Margaretta Recreation League and was an avid Margaretta and Ohio State fan.

Jim is survived by three daughters, Karen Johnson of Sandusky, Robin (Owen) Marey of Huron, and Lisa (Randall) Stasiak of Mesa, Arizona; two sons, James (Nancy) Johnson of Castalia and John (Lori) Johnson of Sandusky; 11 grandchildren, Stephen, Kelly, Melanie, Derek, Morgan, Jamie, Lindsay, Dana, Raquel, Alexandria, Kayla, and Korinna; 12 great-grandchildren, Asher, Miller, Jackson, Evie, Daniel, Malachi, Wyatt, Wayne, Annell, Calliope, and Sicily; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Joyce Hillman Johnson on May 5, 2017; parents: infant son, James B. Johnson Jr.; five brothers; and four sisters.

Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, May 10, 2023, and 10 a.m. Thursday, May 11, 2023, until the time of Jim's services at 11 a.m. at Ransom Funeral and Cremation Service, 610 S. Washington St., Castalia. The Revs. Harvey and Samuel Studer will officiate. Burial will be at Castalia Cemetery.

Sorry to hear of Jim's passing. If there was ever a guy to bring a smile to me, it was him. Every week I'd stop in and he'd take my hand so happy to see me. I loved his stories of WWII and working in the coal mines. He made my day one time when he played the piano and my sister and I danced to it. He also remembered working with my father-in-law and husband on construction jobs. I was told he was a really good guy and funny. His family was so lucky to have had him. I will miss him. One of the good guys! Signed his former Meals on Wheels driver.

Dear Johnson family,
I am so sorry for your loss. I am Hobe Lawson's granddaughter. I am so touched that you mentioned my papaw in the obit. My papaw loved the Johnson brothers Ray and Jim. As a child I remember both of them coming to visit my grandparents. They would laugh, talk, and tell their stories which I loved to listen to. They would take time to talk to me which was so special to me. Both then and now, I could feel so much kindness flowing from them. Thank you Jim Johnson for demonstrating what the love of God looks like when it dwells in a man. Thank you Johnson family for sharing him with all of us. You are in my prayers. My Uncle Jimmy was the best!! I will forever remember his big smile and his hugs. As a little girl he made me feel so special as I served him and my Daddy (Ray) coffee. Later in life, I found out he treated everyone like they were special. Heaven has gained a special angel. To all the family, so sorry for your loss. Let your memories comfort you. Rest in peace Uncle Jimmy from your niece, Cheryl Lynn and husband, Frank Kidd.

So sorry to hear of Jimmy's passing. He was a dear friend to me from day one at Cardiac Rehab. I loved our conversations, his harmonica playing from "Danny Boy" to "Take Me Out to the Ballgame", his delicious beans grown and jarred with love and his stories about Clinchco and his family. Everyone knew Jimmy. Always smiling and positive. You are all so blessed to have had him as your dad, grandpa and great-grandpa and I am blessed to have called him friend. Wonderful memories. God bless you dear Jimmy.

Jim and family,
I´m so very sorry for your loss. Your dad was so nice. I remember him fondly from years ago when we were young and lived close to each other. Also in recent years. I enjoyed listening to him play his harmonica.

May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow. I enjoyed meeting your dad and relating to him that my family was from the same part of Virginia. It was quite an honor that he named me Miss Grundy!
You will be dearly missed.
