James Lon Schwanger, 86, of Castalia, passed away Friday, March 15, 2024 at The Commons of Providence.

He was born April 22, 1937, in Sandusky, to Raymond Michael and Ruth (Singleton) Schwanger.

James graduated from Sandusky High School in 1956 and had one year of college at Purdue University. He was a proud veteran of U.S. Army from 1958-1961, serving in Germany during The Berlin Conflict. Jim retired in 1993 from General Motors, where he worked for nine years as a Union Stuart and 10 years in Health and Safety. Prior to his employment with GM, he was a salesman for Foster Chevrolet for four years. He was a member of VFW Post #2529, American Legion Post 83, AMVETS Post 17, F.O.E. Bellevue, and Sandusky Orioles Club Nest 279. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, being outdoors, wintering in Florida, and spending time with family.

James is survived by his children, Daniel Schwanger, James (Lisa) Schwanger, Nelson Eads, Todd (Kim) Schwanger, Dan (Cheri) Heinzerling, Dena (Doug) Moore, and Michael Schwanger; 16 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; close friends, Stan McPeek, and Greg Ernst; and many other friends and relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; loving wife, Joyce A. (Ebner) Schwanger in 2014; daughter, Laura LaCourse; and daughter-in-law, Debra Schwanger.

Visitation for friends will be 3 p.m. Saturday, March 23, 2024, until the time of James' funeral at 5 p.m. at Toft Funeral Home and Crematory, 2001 Columbus Ave., Sandusky, Ohio, 44870. Inurnment will take place at a later date at Meadow Green Memorial Park, Huron.
