James Herbert Stewart Jr., lovingly known as Herbie, passed away at the age of 80 while under the compassionate care of Stein Hospice. He was born August 16, 1945, in
Bristol, Tennessee, to James Herbert Stewart and Shirley (Stafford) Stewart. Herbie lived a life rooted in love, laughter, and deep devotion to his family and friends.
Herbie was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend to everyone he met. He was a hardworking machine operator who retired from Silgan Plastics, and he took pride in providing for his family, but his greatest joy always came from time spent with those he loved.
He was a member of Bible Methodist Church in Port Clinton and Sandusky Anglers Club. An avid fisherman and hunter, Herbie also found peace in the outdoors and time spent in his garden, especially tending to his beloved tomatoes. He was generous to his core, often sharing food with neighbors and people throughout the community. He truly never met a stranger and made friends everywhere he went.
Family meant everything to Herbie. He never missed a soccer game or practice, and he was just as faithful in attending every basketball game, orchestra concert, and dance recital for his grandchildren. Herbie was always quick with a joke or a funny story, and people were naturally drawn to his warmth and easygoing nature.
Herbie is survived by his loving wife of almost 58 years, Brenda Stewart; his daughters, Sherri Bacak and Susan (David) Behrens; his grandchildren, Caitlin Behrens, Stephen (Brianna) Behrens, and Alicia Bacak (Brian Penn); and his great-grandchildren, Adelee Michelle Behrens and Tate James-Herbert Behrens, whom he affectionately called "Little Herbie."
He is also survived by his brother, Bobby Stewart; brothers-in-law, Douglas Buchanan and Jerry (Darlene) Collins; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his adored sister, Doris Ann Buchanan; special sister-in-law, Margaret Stewart; and his cherished in-laws, Pat and Hilda Collins.
Herbie leaves behind a legacy of kindness, laughter, and unwavering love for his family. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who were lucky enough to know him.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to all the wonderful physicians, nurses, and PCTs at Firelands Regional Medical Center and Stein Hospice for the exceptional and compassionate care they provided to Herbie over the past months and throughout his final days. We are forever grateful for everything you did to help.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, February 12, 2026, at Neidecker, Crosser & Priesman Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 1124 Fulton St., Port Clinton.
