James Tibboles Obituary

James Russell Tibboles, 89, of Beaufort, South Carolina, and formerly of Sandusky, passed way Sunday, Sept. 25, 2022, following a brief illness.
Jim was born in Bellevue to Melvin and Martha (Schaefer) Tibboles. Upon his graduation from Belleveue High School, Jim joined U.S. Navy in 1952. He was first stationed in Pensacola, Florida, and was then sent to the Pacific aboard U.S.S. Boxer CVA21. Upon discharge, Jim worked for U.S. Postal Service where he was a letter carrier for 33 years. Jim was a long-time member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Sandusky, where he married Janice (Sandersen) Tibboles, his wife of 50 years. Together they had two children, Julie (Paul) Tillman of Folly Beach, South Carolina, and Jill (Henry) Merchant of Beaufort, South Carolina.
He is survived by his two children; two grandchildren, Megan Merchant and Hannah Merchant; brother, Bill Tibboles; and sister, Victoria Clevenger.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Janice; and sister, Jeanette Sage.
Jim was an avid waterskier and once skied non-stop across Lake Erie from Lakeside, Ohio, to Kingsville, Canada. He was one of the founding members of Flatwater Ski Club where he also did the groundskeeping for over 20 years. Another passion of Jim's was drag racing. He built and drove dragsters, primarily at Norwalk Raceway and Dragway 42. He also enjoyed basketball and surfing. Jim was a member of Sandusky Elks Lodge and volunteered for many years building homes for Habitat for Humanity, earning the Golden Hammer award.
A memorial service will be 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2022, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Beaufort, South Carolina. A celebration of life will be 5-7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, 2022, at Chet & Matt's Pizza, Sandusky.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sandusky or Habitat for Humanity.

Dear Julie and Jill! Thank you so much for letting me know of your dear dad´s passing! We were friends for over 50 years! He and your Mom were so much a part of our lives until we moved away, but still kept in touch! He called me now and then and asked about us in Florida! We have just been through Hurricane Ian and our community is devastated! Staying with Mackenzie near Tampa. Barney was in hospital during storm and had to be evacuated to another for gallbladder surgery. I know your Dad would have called to check on our safety! Take care and cherish your memories!

I so loved Mr Tibboles!!! When I was a child, he delivered Mail to us on Central & Osborne Streets......I'd hide in the leaf pile and try to startle him!! We would bake cookies, and make ice tea for him almost everyday! When we moved to Fairview Lanes.....,,we again made food and drinks for him! I have always thought he was one of the kindest and most handsome man!!
