John Hinton Obituary

John P. Hinton

Dec 13, 1946 - Oct 9, 2022

Huron

John P. Hinton, 75, passed away Sunday, Oct. 9, 2022, surrounded by his wife, three daughters, and loved ones. John, an avid gardener who described himself as a 'farm boy', was born Dec. 13, 1946, in Mechanicsburg, parents Joe and Elizabeth Hinton.

Throughout his life, John was a competitive, but humble athlete. He was a graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University, where he was a Delta Tau Delta fraternity member and played basketball. He holds a master's degree in education from Xavier University.

After his first teaching job at Urbana school district, John moved to the Sandusky area where he had a long career at Perkins High School as a guidance counselor, cross country, and track coach. Coach Hinton's teams and runners achieved local, state, and national acclaim, including winning three consecutive state championships in cross country between 1987-1989. John coached with empathy and authenticity, contributing to the teams' successes, as well as the strong bonds of friendship that emerged among the runners. In 1994, he was inducted into Ohio Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches Hall of Fame.

Community and charity were important to John and he gave back in small acts of kindness every day. John was a member of Huron Yacht Club where he contributed greatly to the beautification of the grounds. He was also a member of Sandusky Exchange Club, Eagles Club, and was a founding member of Firelands Area Runners Club.

John is survived by his loving wife, Phyllis Hinton; daughters, Emily Hinton, Megan Hinton, and Kallie Hinton; brother, James Hinton; and niece, Tara Hinton.

I went to high school with John. He was truly one of the good guys. I never remember him teasing anyone or being involved in name calling. He was always looking for a way to help out. I'm sorry to learn of his passing.

Fraternity brother and OWU teammate. I absolutely loved this man. So many memories, like the night 6-2 Hubie battled the 6-6 Don Carlos to a draw on the block and the Bishops upset Otterbein. Anytime I hear Marvin Gaye, the Temptations, or the Supremes I will always think of sipping a frosty beverage with Hubie. There will never be another like him.

So sorry to see John has passed away. We knew him from Runner's Club. He was such a nice man and helpful to anyone who needed guidance.

John was my best friend growing up in Mechanicsburg. His father Joe was a WW2 vet who ran our local appliance store and his Mom Betty was a beloved elementary teacher. We marched together as Cub Scouts and once ran away from school for which we got the paddle. Always kind and humble John became one of "the Burg´s" greatest basketball stars before moving on the Ohio Wesleyan. He got the nickname "Hubie" because our high school principal´s name was Hubert Hinton.
We last met at our Class of 64´s last reunion, John was the same quiet unassuming friend as he was back in school. I followed his career at Perkin´s and know he became and will remain a positive presence in many lives as he has been in mine. Rocky Saxbe

I am so sorry to hear of John's passing. We met well over 40 years ago as Cross Country coaches. I am occasionally asked what I miss the most in my coaching career at Port Clinton. Besides my kids, I miss John Hinton. John made me a better coach. He had a holistic approach to coaching that came straight from his heart. I could see it in the way his kids responded to him.
To his family and all his athletes, John was a special gift. He will always be with you.

To many of us John "Hubie" Hinton was not just a Delt fraternity brother but a true brother. Talented, accomplished, genuine, humble and kind, he always found a good word to offer. After college many of us were fortunate to see him from time to time and it was always uplifting. Gone too soon. Deep condolences to his family.

A very rare Man at Perkins. He was actually nice and caring. Always there to talk to if needed. I had not seen him since I left school. But he was one I never forgot. Just a Great, Kind Man. My condolences to his family & friends. God Bless you John.

"Hubie" (as known to his OWU fraternity brothers) was a kind and generous soul who did not possess a mean bone in his body. I had the privilege to room with Hubie during our sophomore year at OWU in the Delta Tau Delta house. We both came from farming communities and shared many stories about growing up in such bucolic settings. I know all the brothers of Delta Tau Delta morn his passing, but also can share that we are certainly better persons for having known "Hubie". RIP

My heartfelt thoughts to Phyllis and his family. Many warm thoughts come to mind when thinking of John. He was a coworker for time, but much more a mentor. He was an incredible person, guidance counselor and long time friend to our family.
Sending peace and our deepest sympathies,

I only had the pleasure of meeting John on a few occasions. He was the kindest man not to mention very handsome. I know how very much he meant to his daughter Emily and how she cherished gardening with him. My heart is with his wife and daughters. RIP John
