John Jones Obituary

John P. Jones

Feb 12, 1955 - Dec 3, 2023

Huron

John P. Jones, 68, of Huron, passed away surrounded by friends Sunday, Dec. 3, 2023, at Stein Hospice.

John was born Feb. 12, 1955, in Sandusky, and was a member of Huron High School's class of 1973. He received a Bachelor of Science and, over the years, was employed by Florida Power and Light Company (1973-2006), Cafe' Huston in Tallahassee (2006-2008), and Volusia County Schools (Daytona, 2008-2015). Before returning to Huron in 2016, John spent his summers as a volunteer at Huron Playhouse. After retirement, he became involved in many community activities including the Sons of Amvets, Huron Historical Society, BGSU Elder College, and Abbey Rose Foundation. He was appointed to fill an unexpired term on the Huron City Council and later served on the Erie County Board of Health, Board of Erie-Ottawa International Airport, and The Huron Education Foundation. John was an American Legion Board Member, member of the Board of EHOVE Career Center, and was elected to Huron City School District's Board of Education (serving two years as President).

He is survived by his brother, Roger W. (Mary Beth) France of Buena Vista, Colorado; nephews, Ryan (Danielle) France and Mason France; and nieces, Robin (Tom) Harms and Megan (Matt) Stacy. Additionally, as a mentor, he had a great influence on a number of young people who still refer to him as "Dad."

John was preceded in death by his father, John P. Jones Sr. in 1981; mother, Sarah Budd Slyker in 2008; and stepfather, Allan R. Slyker in 2016.

Anyone who met John quickly understood his love for his hometown. At his second oncology visit, his physician asked, "Is there anyone in the county who doesn't know you?" It was a fair question about a man who worked tirelessly to bring improvement and positivity to Huron and Erie County.

At John's request, private interment will take place at McMillen Cemetery.

A public celebration of life will be 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2023, at Huron High School, 710 Cleveland Rd. W., Huron, Ohio, 44839.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cancer Fund of The Foundation for Firelands, Huron Educational Foundation or Cancer Services on Perkins Avenue.
