John Preston Obituary

John Richard Preston

Feb 2, 1943 - Aug 25, 2025

Huron

John "Richard" Preston, 82, of Huron, passed away Monday, August 25, 2025, at Firelands Medical Center. He was born February 2, 1943, in Canton, to Charles Arthur and Mary Irene Preston.

Richard was raised on a dairy farm in Bowerston, and graduated from Conotton Valley High School in 1961. After high school, he attended business school in Columbus. While in school, he worked at Huntington National Bank, where he met the love of his life, Donna (Loop) Preston. They married July 7, 1963, and shared 62 wonderful years together.

Richard began his career at Commercial Motor Freight as a dispatcher in Columbus. He was later transferred north and settled in Huron, where he and Donna raised their family. He spent many years as an over-the-road truck driver before finishing his career in the trucking industry as vice president of DC Filter in Sandusky. Prior to his retirement, he worked in maintenance at The Chef's Garden, where he cultivated many friendships that brought him great joy.

A faithful member of Huron United Methodist Church, Richard was a devoted Cleveland Indians fan and an avid euchre player. He enjoyed playing games and cards with family and friends, reading, woodworking, and studying history. One of his greatest joys was spending time with his family at their six-generation family farm, where he cherished campfires and wagon rides with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Richard was a stranger to few and a cherished friend to many.

He is survived by his loving wife, Donna Preston; his son, Doug Preston; daughters, Diane (Wayne) Peters and Annissa (Donnie) Hoyt; grandchildren, Logan Souslin, Caleb Preston, Nicholas (Meiya) Peters, Seth Peters, Logan (Maddie) Delgado, Austin (Alexis) Hoyt, and Lance Delgado; great-grandchildren, Sophia Preston, Lilah and Nolah Peters, Jasper Peters, Benton, Isla, and Carter Delgado, Olivia, Jaxon, Paisley, and Trenton Hoyt; sisters, Marie Peine and Margaret Beyer; sisters-in-law, Lois Zack and Bonnie Geiger; brother-in-law, Curt Clapham; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Mary Preston; grandsons, Nathan Peters and Javen Preston; brothers-in-law, John Peine, Jon Beyer, Raymond Loop, Freddie Biehl, Mike Zack, Michael Geiger, and Dick Myres; and sisters-in-law, Betty Biehl, Ramona Myres, Mary Margaret Clapham, and Helen Loop.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, September 2, 2025, at Foster Funeral Home, 410 Main St., Huron, Ohio 44839.

Funeral services will take place Wednesday, September 3, 2025, at Huron United Methodist Church, 338 Williams St., Huron, Ohio 44839. A viewing will begin at 10 a.m., with the funeral service to follow at 11 a.m.

Burial will follow at Scott Union Cemetery, Huron.

Family and friends are invited to gather for food and fellowship at Huron United Methodist Church following the burial.
