Leon H. Newman, 90, of Sandusky and Roanoke, Virginia, passed away peacefully in the early morning of Friday, Dec. 30, 2022.
Born to Joseph Harry and Eva Martin Newman in Virginia, Leon was preceded in death by his sisters, Bertha, Ruby, and Delores.
He is survived by his sons, Mark (Elizabeth) and Paul Newman; grandchildren, Daniel, Mathis, and Kathleen; former partner, Sarah Lipscomb Beach; loving friends, Peggy and Dennis Murray; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends who fondly recall that "he would do anything for anyone."
Leon was a veteran of the Korean War, retired railroad worker of three decades, and small-scale cattle farmer in the Roanoke, Virginia area. Voted "most athletic" by his high school classmates, his interests included hunting, fishing, basketball, golf, horseback riding, rummy, cooking, and dancing. Leon is remembered by friends and family for his humor, wit, and warmth.
His family would like to thank the Ohio Veterans Home team of caregivers and friends for their support.
A private funeral and burial took place Thursday, Jan. 5, 2023, at Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky.
