Michael Owen Ryan, a pillar of the Huron community, passed away Saturday, Jan. 6, 2024, at the age of 78.
Michael was born Dec. 2, 1945, in Sandusky. He leaves behind a legacy of service, dedication, and passion for education and community involvement.
A proud graduate of Sandusky St. Mary High School and Bowling Green State University, Michael played various crucial roles within the community. He worked at Firelands Winery, owned a bed and breakfast, and actively participated in the YMCA Youth and Government Education and Junior Achievement programs. His true calling, however, was as an American History teacher at Sandusky High School, where he devoted 31 years to educating and inspiring generations of students. Michael's commitment extended beyond the classroom, as he took on roles such as class advisor, Blue Streak football game announcer, drivers' education instructor, and leader in numerous school activities.
A devout member of St. Peter Catholic Church in Huron, Michael also served as a representative for Sandusky Education Association and was a member of both Ohio Education Association and Huron Eagles. His involvement in these organizations highlighted his dedication to the betterment of education and community life.
Michael's passions extended beyond his professional life. He enjoyed traveling, walking, was an avid reader, loved creating beach glass artwork, collected political campaign buttons, and took pleasure in making homemade wine. His enthusiasm for sports was evident in his involvement with the Blue Streak football games.
However, what brought him the most joy, was spending time with family and friends, especially his grandchildren.
Michael is survived by his sons, Kerwick M. (Molly) Ryan and Jude D. (Stacey) Ryan; cherished grandchildren, Saj, Jas, Owen, and Kate; sister, Ellen Kathleen Roth; and sister-in-law, Joann Missler.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Judith Ann (Hildebrand) Ryan; parents, Kerwick J. and Eleanor M. (Conley) Ryan; brothers, Terry and Joseph Ryan; sister, Pat Camella; and brothers-in-law, Norbert Roth and Joseph Camella.
Visitation to celebrate Michael's life will be 4-6:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12, 2024, at Foster Funeral Home & Crematory, 410 Main St., Huron, Ohio, 44839. Mass in remembrance will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, 2024, at St. Peter Catholic Church, 430 Main St., Huron.

Mr. Ryan was my history teacher at Sandusky High School. I remember him to be a kind and gentle teacher. My condolences to his children and grandchildren on his passing.

Mr. Ryan was a dedicated and exceptional teacher. He helped guide me through my first few years of teaching and led the Social Studies Department with both wisdom and wit. He knew his material as well as anyone and his influence can still be felt at Sandusky High today. Few garnered the respect that he had earned over his dedicated teaching career.

Mike has been a friend of our family for 40 yrs. He was an SHS social studies department co-worker, our sons´ teacher & is pictured here with our grandson when we ran into him while walking at Sheldon´s Marsh. He was a wonderful guy. Our condolences to his family & may God hold you in the palm of his hand in the days ahead.

Mike has truly been a close and loyal friend of ours for many years. He was always ready with interesting and humorous stories that would bring smiles to our faces. We will truly miss you at our Wednesday night dinners with our group of friends. To Mike's family....our heartfelt condolences! Our thoughts and prayers are with you!

Mike was a High school classmate and social friend for many years and the world will truly miss that contagious smile of his! I spoke with him last summer at a class reunion . I hadn't seen him for 30 years and he seemed outwardly the same optimistic Mike , even though his wife recently passed. Knowing he is not physically here saddens us all , but I'm so glad that God put him in our lives !Prayers go out for family and Believe he is in our final destination as a citizen of Heaven ! God Bless

Mike was a wonderful and devoted husband, loving father and loyal friend. He was also an avid student of history who not only understood and respected the importance of remembering our past but also committed his career to passing on that knowledge to thousands of young people with the hope his contributions would help lead to a better world. You will be missed dear friend.
