Phillip Benson Obituary

Phillip Aden Benson

Jun 29, 1948 - Mar 9, 2025

Lakeside-Marblehead

Phillip "Phil" Aden Benson was born June 29, 1948, in Marion, to Paul and Patricia Benson. He graduated from Lakeside High School (now Danbury High School) in 1966 and went on to attend Indiana Institute of Technology in Fort Wayne, where he earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. He later obtained a master's degree in business from Indiana University. During his college years, he was a proud member of Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity.

On November 27, 1968, Phil married the love of his life, Sally Sletz, at Grace Episcopal Church in Sandusky.

Phil dedicated 46 years to the telephone and magnet wire industry, retiring as a quality manager from Superior Essex in Tarboro, North Carolina. His career took the family to various places, including Fort Wayne, Indiana, Laurinburg, North Carolina, Lafayette, Indiana, Camden, Arkansas, Elizabethtown, Kentucky, and Rocky Mount, North Carolina, before ultimately returning to his childhood home in Marblehead, Ohio, for retirement.

Beyond his professional life, Phil was an avid outdoorsman who found joy in fishing, boating, Thursday nights at The Crow's Nest dancing and spending time with his beloved grandchildren. He was an active member of Rocky Mount Power Squadron, America's Boating Club, where he earned numerous Commander Awards, including the prestigious Golden Eagle Award from NOAA and Power Squadron. Phil's commitment to service extended beyond his love for the water-he generously volunteered with various organizations in every community he called home.

Phil's memory will be forever cherished by his loving wife, Sally; his children, Tracey Hall (Mike), Scott Benson (Michelle Boice), and Betsy Vick (Ryan); and his grandchildren, Sarah, Meghan, Haley, and Aaron. He is also survived by his sisters, Pamila Drumm (Mike), Paula Hodge (Frank), Polly Lynn, and Penny Czarnecki (Joe); along with many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Patricia Benson; his in-laws, Earl and Ruth Sletz; and his niece, Kim Ireland.

A celebration of life will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 19, 2025, at 282 N. Meadowbrook Drive, Lakeside Marblehead, Ohio 43440.

Phil was a kind, hard working, conscientious man who was so meticulous and analytical. He headed up our Quality Department and made sure that everything that left our plant met or exceeded our customer“s expectations. He spoke with authority and measured every word he said. A very intelligent man who loved his job and did his best to make your day better. The last time I saw him he was at the gym working out after retirement and so full of life. Our world has lost one of our best and Heaven had gained a new citizen.

I will always remember Phil as one of the most honest and sincere people that I have ever known. He was my boss at Superior Essex when he was the Engineering Manager and when he was the Quality Manager as well! Phil always expected the best from his employees, but he always set the example of excellence through his on work ethic. All this being said, I will always remember him as one of my closet dearest friends!
