Richard Hammill

Jun 16, 1937 - Sep 7, 2022

Bellevue

Richard Lee Hammill, 85, a life-long member of Bellevue, Ohio, left his earthly realm Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2022, to begin his Heavenly adventure. Richard was born June 16, 1937, Painesville, Ohio, to Charles Eldon and Alice Burnetta Hammill. Richard was preceded in death by his parents; and eldest son, Randy Hammill.

Richard is survived by the love of his life and best friend, Rosemae Hammill, whom he married Aug. 9, 1958, in Sandusky. They recently celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary. Richard was the proud parents of Randy Lee Hammill (Denise), Laura Ann DuBois, and Roger Allen Hammill (Paula). He was able to celebrate life with six grandchildren, Shawn and Kendra Leonard, Christopher and Lindi Leonard, Heidi Leonard (Jesse Rose), Ashley and Justin Grondin, Tiffany and Kyle Wobser, and Tobias DuBois and eight great-grandchildren, Consetta, Luciano, Joria, Ava, Cathryn, Jesse, Franklin, and Salvador.

Richard's life was anything but boring. He loved music, graduating from Bellevue High School as a band member. He became a member of Sandusky Choral Society, sang in church choirs and was also a member of Lake Plains Barbershop Quartets. Richard was committed to his family and community by sharing his amazing talent for woodworking and building skills, which he put to use blessing family, friends, and even strangers. He and Rosemae restored and lived in the old Worthington Homestead in Bellevue. He referred to himself as a professional saw dust maker.

He enjoyed his hobby of being a private pilot, receiving his pilot license in his own personal plane he shared with his son, Roger. He is a member of First United Methodist Church. Richard also served as a lay minister for the Methodist. He was an avid photographer who photographed many their many adventures hiking, which they did frequently. He was the go-to guy when something needed fixed, built, or repaired. Richard was instrumental in planning the Norfolk and Southern hump yard. He retired as a yardmaster in June, 1999, after 43 years.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that memorials be made to First United Methodist Church, Seidman Cancer Center, Stein Hospice, or Historical Lyme Village.

Visitation will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2022, until the time of Richard's funerl at 1 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 901 Northwest St., Bellevue, Ohio, 44811. Burial will follow at Strongs Ridge Cemetery, Lyme Township.

My heart is so full of love and gratitude that I have been able to call this couple my Godparents for 46 years of life. At the same time, my heart weeps with Nana that her mighty right arm has gone before her. This couple embodied true friendship to my parents. They embody true mentorship, guidance, love, and parenting to me (and to my husband) as my Godparents. They represent in our community goodness, righteousness, godliness, and faith. These 2 are true Elders in the Lord. Mr. Hammill poured out his life for others until the last moment he could. He kept the faith. He finished his race. And he is standing today clothed in the glory of His Savior, and I feel pretty confident he has heard those precious words, "Well done, my good and faithful servant."

Rosemae, so sorry to recieve the sad news about Dick. I have great memories of our friendship, especially the various singing gigs we shared. What I will always admire, was Dick's
deep faith and his ability to share it.
My sincere sympathy, Jim Armbrust
