Richard Hartley, 84, of Huron, passed away Saturday, Aug. 3, 2024, at Parkvue following a brief illness.
He was born Feb. 18, 1940, in Sandusky, the son of Thomas and Aileen (Ireton) Hartley. He graduated from Huron High School in 1958 and earned his degree from Ohio University in 1962. Richard served with honor in U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War, playing many sports including travel tennis.
Richard was a man of many talents and passions. He wrote for area papers as a sports writer covering local high school sports and was a dedicated master gardener. He designed the children's garden at a local school and was recognized often for his volunteer efforts. Richard was also the HHS boys and girls tennis coach in the 80s. He was a role model to many with his love of nature and his treatment of her.
Richard is survived by his daughters, Sandra (Bob) Schuh and Michelle Shumaker, both of Huron; grandchildren, Cody, Devon, and Connor; great-grandchildren; sister, Judy; and brother, Thomas.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife and best friend, Carolyn (Leidheiser) Hartley, whom he first noticed their kindergarten year in Huron; and brother, James Hartley.
The family will conduct a private gathering in his memory.
Memorial contributions may be made to Huron Helping Hands Food Pantry, BGSU Firelands Arboretum, or Erie Metro Parks.

Richard was a great customer of our store who became a friend. I always loved making him laugh, he had a great laugh, and I remember being impressed by his photography and his knowledge of plants and flowers. He was fun to joke around with and we all enjoyed seeing him.
