Ross Hazzard Obituary

Ross Hazzard

Sep 5, 1943 - May 2, 2023

Port Clinton

Ross Hazzard, 79, of Port Clinton, passed away Tuesday, May 2, 2023, at Firelands Hospital after a brief illness.

Ross was born Sept. 5, 1943, in Sandusky, the son of Velma (Robron) and Hollis Hazzard. He was a 1960 graduate of Port Clinton High School.

He is survived by three children, Carolyn (Michael) Nitz, John (Kristin) Hazzard, and Tammy (Tim) Biniecki; and three grandchildren, Kayley Walton, Ross Hazzard, and Morgan Hazzard.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Shirley (Neill) Hazzard; brother, Richard Hazzard; and sister, Carole Fritz.

Above all else, Ross was a family man. He was known to tell anyone who would listen how proud he was of each of his children and grandchildren. He encouraged them in anything they did and gave everything of himself for them to pursue their dreams. Whether it was his words or his actions, his loved ones always knew right where they stood in his mind. He loved with his whole heart and wore his emotions on his sleeves.

Ross worked in the auto-body repair industry his whole life. He owned and operated Hazzard Body Shop on Sand Road in Port Clinton for 36 years. When he wasn't working, he enjoyed life to the fullest. He was always ready with a quick witted comment and a joke. He filled his free time enjoying family, working on his 1950 Oldsmobile, golfing, and fishing.

Ross' funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday, May 6, 2023, at Neidecker, Crosser & Priesman Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Port Clinton Chapel, where the family will receive friends beginning at 10 a.m. Burial will be at Castalia Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Humane Society of Ottawa County or Resurrection Lutheran Church.

I only recently found out about Ross' passing, but better late than never. Ross and I spent much of our early childhood together as we lived about a block apart on Sand Road. We played baseball in my front yard from the time we were 7 or 8 years old and basketball in our garage or wherever we could find a basket. In the Fall when the lake receded, we made a golf course on the sandbars off the shore behind my house. Ross was a much better golfer than I was. In our teens, Ross and I played baseball together in the 13 to 15 year old league. I was player manager for our team one year and Ross was our catcher. He was a really good catcher but preferred playing other positions. Since there was no one else on our team who could catch, I practically had to force him to do it. He would finally give in ... most of the time. We spent almost every day in the summers together until my family moved out to Catawba in 1957. He was my best friend in those early years even though he was a year younger than I. I'll always remember Ross.
