George Russell "Russ" Bateson, 95, residing in Sandusky, passed away Monday morning, May 6, 2024, after a brief illness.

Russ was born Aug. 9, 1928, in Akron, to Clarence Smith and Frances (Higgins) Bateson.

Russ graduated from Buchtel High School and served in U.S. Marines. Russ married Dorothy Tartara in Dec., 1948, and had three daughters. He started his career in Life Insurance with an office in Canton and moved his family back to Akron and worked for B.F. Goodrich. Russ was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Akron, where he participated in the men and boys choir. The family moved several times with the Chamber of Commerce, Galax, VA, Sandusky, Lorain, and then retiring from Wayne Development Council in Wooster after many years of service. Russ returned to Sandusky to be closer to his daughters. In his younger years, Russ was an avid golfer, enjoyed singing, and was a big supporter of University of Pittsburgh. In his later years, he enjoyed volunteering at Firelands Regional Medical Center and The Maritime Museum of Sandusky.

Russ leaves behind his three daughters, Michele (Dan) Conrad of Arizona and Denise Lindsey and Nanette Bateson, both of Sandusky; 10 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wives, Dorothy, Louise, and Emily; grandson, Naman Wright; great-granddaughter, Madison Cheatham; and sister, Betty Comstock.

Private family services will be conducted at a later date.

Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory, Sandusky, will be assisting family with arrangements.
