Russell Camp Obituary

Russell John Camp

Mar 11, 1945 - May 15, 2024

Sandusky

Russell J. "Russ" Camp, 79, of Sandusky, passed away Wednesday, May 15, 2024, at The Meadows at Osborn Park.

He was born March 11, 1945, in Cleveland, to Russell S. and Caroline L. (Michel) Camp. Russ was a 1963 graduate of Perkins High School.

He was employed by Associated Suppliers and then was a truck driver for Man-Friedi and Keenan-Advantage Truck Lines for over 30 years.

His passion was drag racing, being a part of the Camp & McCluskey Race Team and driving for Sage Brothers, driving funny cars and dragsters. After retirement, he would be seen mowing grass at his house and the neighbors. He loved nature and his cats.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Mindy (Ohner) Camp; sister, Carol Ann Beaman; niece, Kendra Hansen; nephew, Ron Beaman; kitten, Maggie; special friends, Pat and Jim Rosin and Butch Lang; and the many other friends he hung out with at the drag strip.

Russ was preceded in death by his parents; and several aunts and uncles.

Mindy would like to thank Cleveland Clinic, Stein Hospice, and everyone else who cared for Russ during his illness.

Mindy will greet friends from 3 p.m. Thursday, May 23, 2024, until the time of Russ' celebration of life at 4 p.m. at Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, 2001 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. His good friend and neighbor, Tracy Shoemo, will do the eulogy.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Erie County Humane Society, 1911 Superior St., Sandusky, Ohio, 44870.

I went into Mikey's and unexpectedly asked, "Who owns the old Ford truck outside?". And so a friendship began. In that old Ford, Russ drove me over the hill and down the lane to the spot where Shawn and I were married. Such a perfect memory, Russ calmed my nerves and made me laugh. Turns out you guys know my parents and so many of our family and friends including those in the racing world. Shawn kept saying, I've got to take the car over and show you guys. Life can be so relentless and when you think you can do it this weekend or call next week...just like that, you can't.
We are so very sorry Mindy to hear of your loss. We think of you often, and now offer you our deepest sympathies, peace and comfort, love and courage. The two of you are such amazing people, humble....authentic! Selfless and kind, the love you shared admirable and reverent.
Rest easy Sir.
Our best to you Mindy at such a difficult time, thoughts and prayers -
Sherri & Shawn Fischer-Sinnaeve

Russ was a Sandusky native. All us old "gear heads" remember him. He always had something to say that made me laugh. Thanks Russel. See you on the other side.

It's been many years since I saw Russell. I remember when we were kids living on Milan Road. My Mom would bring us over to hang out with Russ and Carol. We always managed to get into some kind of trouble. My deepest condolences to the family. My Russell rest in Peace. God Bless

Russ scared the hell out of me! When I was a little kid. He put me in the seat of his dragster, fired up the engine and told me not to touch anything. That was so cool! Thanks for the memories!

Back in the day (1960´s) when buzzing the ave was in vogue Russ supported the Bondo Company all by himself! A nicer guy you never met! Goodbye Russ and rest in peace. The 60´s were the best of times!
