Sue Burggraf Obituary

Sue Ann Burggraf

Jun 4, 1945 - May 10, 2024

Arlington, VA

Sue Ann Burggraf, 78, died unexpectedly Friday, May 10, 2024, in Arlington, Virginia.

She was born June 4, 1945, in Castalia, to Edwin and Gladine Burggraf, who preceded her in death.

Sue is survived by her sister, Jean Holbrook of Harrisville, West Virginia.

Sue graduated from Margaretta High School in 1963 and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Ohio University in 1967. She had a very successful career in the Central Intelligence Agency with assignments in Washington, D.C., The Netherlands, Germany, and Poland. While serving in Poland, Sue was involved in a very important and successful operation that resulted in a Polish colonel and his family escaping to the West. Her role in this operation is described in the book "A Secret Life" by Benjamin Weiser.

Sue's memorial service will be Tuesday, June 4, 2024, at Faith Lutheran Church in Arlington. Her remains will then be transported to Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, Sandusky, for burial at Castalia Cemetery beside her father and mother.

I am so sorry to hear of Sue´s passing. We were both members of McLean AAUW and shared many hours working on the used book sale. She was such an asset.

This is hard to write . . I was shocked to learn of Sue's death! I remain sad and heartsick, and although I'd only known her for a short while, I respected and admired her. So courageous, resilient, intelligent, and with-it! But this isn't about me; my sincere sympathy goes to her family and friends, especially to Jean. Sue and I were colleagues in a way yet her career service to our country will live on forever. As will our loving memories of Sue. God bless.

I met Sue and Dee through the McLean AAUW many years ago at their annual book collection & sale, now defunct. Sue was one of the experts heading up the collection. I always enjoyed talking to Sue and Dee about their travels to England & Europe.
Sue, you will be greatly missed for your friendship, AAUW involvement and loving care of Dee.
With Blessings and Love,

Condolences to the family and friends of Ms. Sue Burggraf. Many in Polish diaspora around the world, but particularly here in the United States, are aware of - and are deeply thankful for - her role in saving Polish Colonel Ryszard Kukli´nski and his family during the Cold War in the late 1970s and early 1980s. She was a very brave woman. Thank you Ms. Burggraf for your service to the United States. May your memory be a blessing.
